• DA LAT NUCLEAR REACTOR - "HEART" OF THE INSTITUTE
Established in 1976, the Institute of Nuclear Research and Development has the main task of managing, safely operating and effectively exploiting the Dalat Nuclear Reactor. This is the "heart" of the Institute, where important research, production and training activities take place. Over the past 40 years, the Institute has safely operated the Dalat Nuclear Reactor for a total of more than 71,500 hours. The Institute's engineers and scientists have completely mastered the reactor technology, ensuring absolute safety for people and the environment.
With 180 staff, workers and employees, the Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology has achieved many proud achievements. In the field of scientific research, the Institute has published about 50 scientific research works each year, contributing to the treasure of human knowledge. The Institute has successfully researched and prepared over 30 types of radioactive isotopes and tracers, serving the medical and other economic and technical sectors. In particular, 7 products of the Institute have been included in the list of drugs of Vietnam. The Institute is currently managing 3 national environmental radiation monitoring stations in Da Lat, Ninh Thuan and Ho Chi Minh City, ensuring radiation safety for the community.
In addition, over the years, the Institute has carried out many cooperation projects with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and international partners, improving the capacity for research and application of atomic energy.
Radiation and nuclear safety is always the top priority of the Institute of Nuclear Research. The Institute has built a strict safety management system, ensuring that all activities are carried out in absolute safety. In addition, the Institute is always ready to respond to any incidents that may occur. The Institute is currently a human resource training facility for the Vietnamese atomic energy industry, including short-term specialized training courses, doctoral training...; in the past 40 years, it has trained 38 doctors for the Institute and other universities and research facilities at home and abroad.
• LOOKING TOWARDS THE FUTURE
With its achievements, the Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology deserves to be the pride of the Vietnamese atomic energy industry. In its future development orientation, the Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology aims to become a multidisciplinary, high-level scientific and technological organization in the Asia-Pacific region. The Institute will continue to promote its achievements, while promoting research and application of atomic energy to serve the sustainable development of the country.
In particular, implementing Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW dated December 22, 2024 of the Politburo with 3 pillars of "Science and Technology, Innovation and Digital Transformation", with the role and responsibility of the Institute in the new era, the era of national development, the Institute said it will actively participate in the Nuclear Power Program, first of all the Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Project, in which it will play a key role in the Nuclear Science and Technology Research Center Project with a new high-capacity reactor, 20 times larger than the Da Lat Reactor. Support Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Project 1 and 2 on: Consulting on technology selection and reactor safety; consulting on the selection of other technology systems such as: radioactive waste treatment; safety, radiation and nuclear security, ... Training human resources for research and operation of the plant, including supplementing and updating basic knowledge about atomic nuclei; internships and training in laboratories and reactor technology systems.
During his recent visit and work with the Institute of Nuclear Science, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh also expressed his hope that in the near future, a nuclear energy industry will be formed, along with a nuclear science industry. Therefore, the Deputy Prime Minister expects that the scientists of the Institute will have greater aspirations and make more breakthroughs.
