The EUR/USD pair continued to decline slightly around 1.1390 during the US trading session. The DXY index, which measures the strength of the USD against six other major currencies, approached 99.35.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said China should initiate trade talks with the US, as it exports five times more to the US than the US sells to China. The comments raised doubts among investors about the real progress of trade talks.
US President Donald Trump also claimed that Chinese President Xi Jinping had called him multiple times to discuss trade, but China denied that any such discussions had taken place. These conflicting statements have dimmed hopes for an early end to the trade war.
In addition to fluctuations from political information, the market also focuses on a series of important US economic data this week, including first-quarter GDP, ISM PMI index, ADP employment data, April non-farm payrolls (NFP) report and March personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index. These data will greatly affect the Federal Reserve's (Fed) monetary policy expectations.
In Tuesday's trading session, US JOLTS data showed that the number of job openings in March reached only 7.19 million, lower than the forecast of 7.5 million and down from 7.48 million in February, showing signs of a slowdown in the US labor market.
