August 5, 2024 was one of the saddest days for Asian stock markets. In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index saw a dramatic drop of 4,451.28 points, a record decline in the country's stock market history.
Like a domino effect, other stock markets in the Asia- Pacific region also plummeted. Taiwan's Taiex index fell by more than 8%; South Korea's KOSPI also lost more than 8%, and trading was temporarily suspended…
In Vietnam, the market was also in the red. At the opening of trading, the indices plummeted, with the VN-Index losing 20 points immediately after the opening auction.
At the close of the morning session, the VN-Index fell 24.38 points (-1.97%), to 1,212.22 points. The HNX-Index also dropped sharply by 4.28 points (-1.85%) to 227.28 points. The UPCoM-Index fell 1.77 points (-1.89%) to 92.00 points.

While investors tried to hold on during the morning session, with trading volume remaining below 6,500 billion VND across the three exchanges despite a sharp drop in the index, selling pressure intensified in the afternoon as Asian markets became increasingly negative.
A series of stocks turned from red to light green. In the VN30 group, 24 out of 30 stocks fell by more than 3%, with GVR hitting the floor limit; VRE and HDB falling by more than 6%; and TPB, TCB,SHB , and SSI falling by more than 5%.
Securities stocks experienced the sharpest decline, with an overall drop of nearly 5%. Many stocks hit or fell to their floor price, including VND, VDS, TCI, HCM, VCI, MBS, SSI, etc.
Among the leading bank stocks, only EIB managed to maintain its positive performance, while the rest experienced significant declines, causing the sector index to fall by more than 3.5%. The real estate sector also saw a similar decline, exceeding 3.5%.
At the close of trading, the VN-Index fell 48.53 points (-3.92%) to 1,188.07 points. This was the sharpest decline for the index since the nearly 60-point drop on April 15, 2024. On the HOSE exchange, 448 stocks declined, including 91 that hit the floor price, while only 24 stocks increased.
The HNX-Index also fell by 8.85 points (-3.82%) to 222.71 points today. On the HNX, 171 stocks declined, including 19 that hit the floor price, while 33 stocks increased.
The UPCoM-Index fell 2.99 points (-3.18%) to 90.79 points.
The sell-off also triggered bargain hunting. Trading volume surged in the afternoon session, bringing the total value of matched orders across the three exchanges to nearly 26,500 billion VND. Foreign investors reversed course and sold heavily, offloading over 850 billion VND worth of shares today.
