Recently, the medical team at MEDLATEC General Hospital successfully resuscitated a 60-year-old male patient who suffered an acute myocardial infarction and was admitted in critical condition with complications of cardiac arrest, potentially leading to death.

Sudden, severe chest pain - A warning sign of a heart attack requiring immediate emergency treatment within the "golden hour".

Thirty minutes before being admitted to the hospital, after lifting heavy objects, male patient NPL (60 years old, from Hanoi ) suddenly experienced severe left chest pain, a feeling of constriction and pressure behind the sternum.

The patient was quickly brought to MEDLATEC General Hospital by his family. Upon assessing the severity of his condition, a multidisciplinary medical team convened an emergency consultation. The patient underwent electrocardiogram, ultrasound, and laboratory tests right at the emergency room bedside. The results concluded that Mr. L. had suffered an acute myocardial infarction within the second hour.

However, just 10 minutes after admission, the patient suddenly lost consciousness, gasped for breath, and lost the carotid-femoral pulse. Recognizing the dangerous signs of cardiac arrest and the imminent risk of death, the medical team quickly performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) according to the CAB protocol, ensuring vital signs by intubating the patient for mechanical ventilation, establishing a central venous catheter, and administering vasopressors.

After 15 minutes of intense effort by the medical team, the patient's critical condition was initially brought under control, and vital signs stabilized.

The emergency team at MEDLATEC General Hospital promptly provided emergency care to the patient.

Dr. Pham Duy Hung, Deputy Head of the Internal Medicine Department, Intensive Care Unit, MEDLATEC General Hospital - the lead physician of the emergency team, said: “Although the initial prognosis was stable, the patient's condition was acute and very dangerous. Emergency coronary stent placement surgery was necessary for survival. We quickly contacted colleagues at a higher-level hospital to arrange for the patient's transfer and timely surgery.”

During the patient's transfer, the MEDLATEC resuscitation team personally stayed on the ambulance, ensuring the patient was safely transported to a higher-level hospital. Fortunately, the surgery was successful, and the patient recovered well after a life-threatening ordeal.

The MEDLATEC medical team is on standby in the ambulance, safely transporting patients to higher-level hospitals.

Based on this case, MEDLATEC experts advise: Severe chest pain is a typical symptom of acute myocardial infarction, and patients need to seek medical attention as soon as possible. Missing the "golden hour" makes treatment difficult and significantly increases the risk of complications and death.

Cardiac arrest emergency: Requires rapid diagnosis and timely, correct treatment.

Cardiac arrest is a condition where the heart stops contracting, preventing blood from flowing to other parts of the body. This is a particularly dangerous condition that can lead to rapid death or leave serious, permanent sequelae if the patient does not receive timely emergency treatment.

A patient is diagnosed with cardiac arrest when they exhibit the following signs:

  • Sudden loss of consciousness, unresponsive to being shaken or called.
  • Stopping breathing or gasping for breath.
  • The large pulse is not beating.

Due to its serious nature, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) requires highly professional skills, speed, accuracy, and timeliness.

With experience in commanding and directly performing successful emergency resuscitation for many critical cases at MEDLATEC General Hospital, MSc. Dr. Pham Duy Hung stated that the following factors are necessary for successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation:

  • Patient assessment skills are crucial: Physicians need to assess cardiac arrest rapidly, within a timeframe of no more than 10 seconds, in order to quickly initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Prompt and precise procedure execution, adhering to principles and a systematic approach: When a patient experiences cardiac arrest, the doctor directly performs the resuscitation procedure and issues medical orders; the nurse coordinates seamlessly to carry out other orders (infusion, injection, manual ventilation, etc.) and closely monitors vital signs.
  • A sense of urgency, perseverance, and dedication: Emergency teams need to understand that the patient's chances of survival are measured in seconds; therefore, emergency care must be provided with the heart, intellect, and expertise of the doctors and nurses.

At the MEDLATEC Healthcare System and MEDLATEC General Hospital in particular, the emergency procedures are scientifically and systematically established, ensuring compliance with the regulations of the Ministry of Health . In addition, the medical staff continuously receive training, update their expertise, and regularly practice, ensuring timely and effective response and successful treatment when receiving emergency cases.

MEDLATEC General Hospital provides emergency care 24/7, including holidays. Please contact our hotline at 1900 56 56 56 for prompt assistance.
