Regarding the US Department of Commerce's announcement that it has not yet recognized Vietnam as a market economy , Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thang stated that Vietnam deeply regrets and is disappointed by this, because in recent years, trade and investment relations between the two countries have developed unprecedentedly strongly; both countries have also made great efforts to elevate the relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership; and Vietnam has met all six criteria set by the US Department of Commerce when considering the recognition of a country as a market economy. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thang suggested that both sides should continue to strengthen exchanges, and the US should objectively assess and move towards recognizing Vietnam as a market economy. He also expressed his hope that US companies would continue to increase investment in Vietnam in promising sectors; export US products with competitive advantages to Vietnam; and this could be an important factor in reducing the US trade deficit with Vietnam.![]() |

For their part, the leaders of the US State Department shared Vietnam's concerns regarding the recognition of a market economy and affirmed that this would not affect the economic relationship between the two countries, which is developing very well and is moving towards the 30th anniversary of the normalization of relations between Vietnam and the United States in 2025.
