Dutch scientists have just launched the country's first laboratory tasked with researching how autonomous, insect-sized drones can perform tasks such as locating gas leaks in factories or participating in search and rescue operations.

With the commissioning of the Swarming Lab, researchers at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) aim to create approximately 100 tiny unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) capable of performing missions 24/7. These UAVs can autonomously land on charging stations and take off again to continue flying without human intervention.
Researchers have now developed technology that allows robots to sense each other's presence without external assistance. Guido de Croon, director of the Swarming Lab, said scientists are working to develop a "swarm" of flying devices that are both aware of each other's existence and capable of coordinating to complete complex tasks.
