Two Iraqi security sources said the al Asad air base in western Iraq was hit by two rockets. It is unclear who was behind the attack.
CBS News, citing officials, reported that it appears the two Katyusha rockets were fired from a modified pickup truck.
U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been briefed on the attack and are reviewing steps to protect forces and respond to any attack in a manner and location of Washington's choosing.
Last week, the U.S. also conducted a defensive airstrike in Iraq, targeting what Washington alleged were insurgent targets preparing to launch drones that threatened U.S. and coalition forces.
Currently, the US has approximately 2,500 troops stationed in Iraq. Iraq has experienced escalating retaliatory attacks since the Hamas-Israel conflict erupted last October.
The incident occurred amid growing concerns about escalating tensions in the Middle East following the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran last week.
On August 4th, the White House announced that the US would deploy additional warships and fighter jets to the Middle East.
In an interview on CBS 's Face the Nation program, White House Deputy National Security Advisor Jonathan Finer stated that the common goal is to reduce regional tensions and prevent potential attacks.
