On August 1st, Halla Tomasdottir was inaugurated as President of Iceland after winning the election two months prior.

In her inaugural address to Parliament, Tomasdottir highlighted Iceland's achievements in education , health, and prosperity over the past 80 years, while emphasizing the need for dialogue, cooperation, and inclusion, particularly the participation of the younger generation.
According to Tomasdottir, Iceland needs to focus on mental and social health issues, and foster trust, solidarity, and unity to overcome current global challenges.
In the Icelandic presidential election on June 1st, Tomasdottir defeated two other female candidates, former Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir and environmental expert Halla Hrund Logadottir, winning to succeed President Gudni Th. Johannesson.
In Iceland, the presidency is largely ceremonial but has the power to veto bills or call referendums. Tomasdottir is the second female president in the country's history. Iceland's first female president was Vigdis Finbogadottir in 1980.
