Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Thanh (residing in Hamlet 7, Ba Gia Commune, Da Huoai District, Lam Dong Province) is famous for being a good durian grower. More specifically, she is also one of the originators and pioneers of durian growing in Hamlet 7 and the production area along Xa Bo Stream.

Ms. Thanh said that in 1988, her family migrated from Long An to Ba Gia area, Da Huoai district. With the skills, knowledge and experience of the people in the fruit-growing plains, Ms. Thanh took the lead in growing durian trees.

"Previously, the life of the people in village 7 was very difficult. People mainly grew cassava, cashew, and farmed for a living. With the desire to have a better life, I boldly experimented with growing durian in this area. The initial results were that a few durian trees that my family had planted since migrating here bore good fruit. Motivated, in 2010, I proactively planted more than 3 hectares of durian varieties Ri6 and Monthon. Suitable for the soil and climate, durian trees have grown well in Xa Bo stream area and brought high income to my family," Ms. Thanh shared.

According to Ms. Thanh, Ba Gia land has a very special climate, with enough irrigation water, so durian bears fruit very early. While the main crop is usually harvested in June and July, in Ba Gia area, early-ripening durian is harvested at the end of April. This is a huge advantage of Ba Gia durian area because early-ripening fruit, supplied when the market is still scarce, will fetch a high price.

With an area of 3 hectares of durian, Ms. Thanh's family harvests an average of 60 tons/year, of which about 20 tons are early-ripening durian, with very high prices.

To get good crop yields, Ms. Thanh's family has researched and boldly applied the latest garden care technologies such as: spraying pesticides through pipes using automatic technology, automatic watering at the roots...

Ms. Thanh said that spraying pesticides through a system of plastic pipes that stick close to the tree trunk helps to spray the pesticide evenly while saving time, and farmers do not need to come into direct contact with the pesticide. This technology helps increase productivity and garden quality as well as reduce costs and protect farmers' health.

From her experience after many years of planting and monitoring the growth of the tree, Ms. Thanh realized that Ba Gia area in particular and Da Huoai area in general do not have many diseases that harm durian. Therefore, it is only necessary to pay special attention to the rainy season because rainwater can easily cause fungus, spraying fungicides and fruit care products is enough to protect the durian area.

Durian trees have much higher economic value than other perennial crops.

Not only is she a good farmer with high income for her family, Ms. Thanh is also the core to promote the development of specialized durian growing areas along Xa Bo stream. The success of Ms. Thanh and her family is an encouragement for farmers in the area to switch crops (from low-yield cashew) to durian.

Ms. Thanh herself, with the desire "the whole village develops together", is always willing to share her experiences; creating the best conditions for other farmers in the area to develop durian trees together.

Ms. Pham Thi Kim Oanh, an agricultural extension worker in Ba Gia commune, Da Huoai district, said that Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Thanh is a good farmer and has a vision for the durian industry. The production area along Xa Bo stream has over 80 households and over 100 hectares of land growing durian, coffee and other industrial crops. To ensure sustainable output for durian, Ms. Thanh has actively encouraged farmers in the entire production area to unite and cultivate in accordance with the regulations of the Department of Agriculture to build a code for growing durian for export to the Chinese market.

With the support of the government and businesses, the Xa Bo stream production area was granted a code with 22 households and 54 hectares of durian. This is truly a proud and admirable success. In that success, there is a great effort and contribution of Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Thanh.
