According to information from the Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee, the Provincial People's Council has just issued a resolution approving the merger of Dong Son district into Thanh Hoa City; the establishment of wards and the rearrangement of commune-level administrative units in Thanh Hoa City for the period 2023-2025.
The Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Council has assigned the Provincial People's Committee to finalize the project dossier and report it to the Government for submission to the National Assembly Standing Committee for consideration and decision.

According to the proposal from the People's Committee of Thanh Hoa province, the entire 82.87 square kilometers of natural area and a population of 101,272 people of Dong Son district will be merged with Thanh Hoa city. After the merger, Thanh Hoa city will have an area of 228.22 square kilometers and a population of 615,106 people.
After the merger, the name will remain Thanh Hoa City. The reason is that the name Thanh Hoa has existed since 1029, and the names of the former administrative centers or the city today have always been associated with the name of the province, Thanh Hoa Inner Town (Thanh Hoa Town).
In 1889, when the town was established, it was named Thanh Hoa; in 1994, when the city was established, it was also named Thanh Hoa.
Thus, the name Thanh Hoa has a history of nearly 1,000 years. This is one of the regions deeply imbued with the identity of Vietnam's thousand-year-old civilization, a land rich in historical, cultural, and revolutionary traditions.
Furthermore, before the merger, Thanh Hoa City had a population of over 500,000 people and many businesses located within its boundaries. Therefore, retaining the name Thanh Hoa City would reduce the impact on the socio -economic situation and people's lives.
In addition, the current name is consistent with the urban designation of Thanh Hoa province's capital city in many important central and provincial documents.
Following the merger, Thanh Hoa City will have 47 administrative units (including 33 wards and 14 communes). Simultaneously with the merger of Dong Son district into Thanh Hoa City, four wards will be established: Rung Thong, Dong Thinh, Hoang Quang, and Hoang Dai; and Tan Son ward will be merged with Phu Son ward, retaining the name Phu Son ward.
