According to information from the People's Committee of Thanh Hoa province, the Provincial People's Council has just issued a resolution approving the policy of merging Dong Son district into Thanh Hoa city; establishing wards and arranging commune-level administrative units in the 2023-2025 period of Thanh Hoa city.
Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Council has assigned the Provincial People's Committee to complete the project dossier and report to the Government to submit to the National Assembly Standing Committee for consideration and decision.

According to the proposal of Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee, the entire 82.87km2 natural area and population of 101,272 people of Dong Son district and Thanh Hoa city will be merged. After the merger, Thanh Hoa city will be 228.22km2 wide and have a population of 615,106 people.
After the merger, the name Thanh Hoa City will be kept. The reason is that the name Thanh Hoa has existed since 1029, the name of the former capital, department or the city today is always associated with the name of the province with the name Thanh Hoa Noi Tran (Thanh Hoa town).
In 1889, when the town was established, it was named Thanh Hoa; in 1994, when the city was established, it was also named Thanh Hoa.
Thus, the name Thanh Hoa has a history of nearly 1,000 years. This is one of the lands bearing the identity of the thousand-year-old Vietnamese culture, a land rich in historical, cultural and revolutionary traditions.
In addition, Thanh Hoa City before the merger had a population of more than 500,000 people, with many businesses located in the area, so keeping the name Thanh Hoa City will reduce the impact and influence on the socio-economy and people's lives.
Besides, the current name is consistent with the designation of Thanh Hoa provincial capital in many important documents of the Central and the province.
After the merger, Thanh Hoa City will have 47 administrative units (including 33 wards and 14 communes). At the same time as merging Dong Son district into Thanh Hoa City, 4 wards will be established, including: Rung Thong, Dong Thinh, Hoang Quang and Hoang Dai; Tan Son ward will be merged with Phu Son ward, named Phu Son ward.
