This move comes after rocket attacks on southern Israel. Colonel Avichay Adraee, the IDF's Arabic spokesperson, announced a list of areas requiring evacuation. The announcement urged Palestinians in the designated areas to evacuate to humanitarian zones established by Israel.
According to AP , the forces said they would soon operate Khan Younis in response to Palestinian rocket fire. Khan Younis, the second-largest city in the Gaza Strip, suffered extensive damage following air and ground fighting earlier this year.
The Gaza Strip is facing a severe humanitarian crisis, with Israeli restrictions on aid and ongoing fighting limiting access to medical supplies, food, and other resources. Health authorities in Gaza say the death toll in the territory is nearing 40,000.
In the early morning of August 10th, four rockets were fired into a residential area in the village of Kissufim, near the border between Israel and Gaza, but there were no casualties. This prompted Israel to further expand its military operation in Khan Younis. Prior to this, the IDF had issued evacuation orders in other areas of Khan Younis.
A source within the United Nations Security Council said on August 10 that Algeria had requested a meeting of the Council following an Israeli attack on a school in Gaza City, a refuge for displaced Palestinians.
The source did not specify the date and location of the meeting that might be convened. The UN Human Rights Office said Israel attacked the crowded school at least three times during early morning prayers on August 10, with initial reports indicating at least 93 Palestinians were killed, including 11 children and 6 women. Dozens more were reportedly seriously injured, mostly children, women, and the elderly. Meanwhile, the Israeli military justified the attacks by emphasizing that the school housed at least 20 Hamas and Islamist militants, including high-ranking commanders.
The UN estimates that Israel has carried out at least 21 attacks on schools sheltering displaced people in Gaza since July 4, killing at least 274. The Israeli military claims the schools are being used by Palestinian armed groups.
The Lebanese Foreign Ministry on the same day condemned Israel's actions in terms of international law and humanitarian standards. The statement from the Lebanese Foreign Ministry also emphasized: “The deliberate killing of a large number of unarmed Palestinian civilians by the Israeli army in the attack on the Al-Taba'een school in the Gaza Strip is clear evidence of Israel's intention to prolong and expand the scope of the war, especially in the context of international mediators pushing for efforts to achieve a ceasefire. The systematic and indiscriminate shelling by the Israeli army, as well as the killing of children and civilians, demonstrates the Israeli government's disregard for international law and humanitarian standards.”
The Lebanese Foreign Ministry called on the international community and relevant countries to adopt a unified, serious, and effective stance to protect the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and end the humanitarian catastrophe in the Mediterranean coastal region.
