According to the Times of Israel , Sinwar is the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip and is considered to be behind the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which sparked the war that has lasted nearly 10 months.
The new Hamas leader was captured by Israeli forces in 1988 and sentenced to life imprisonment on charges related to assassination and terrorism.
However, Sinwar was released in 2011 as part of a prisoner exchange agreement between Hamas and Israel, in which Israel released more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Hamas freeing Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.
Sinwar is known for his hardline stance and often calls for attacks against Israel.
Following this new development, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz called for the "swift removal" of the new Hamas political leader Yahya Sinwar.
On social media platform X, Katz stated that this appointment "is another compelling reason to quickly remove" him and "wipe out" Hamas.
