Việt NamViệt Nam29/04/2025

(HTV) - From April 23 to 29, 2025, Ho Chi Minh City will organize an English proficiency test for all high school teachers.

This is the first step towards realizing an important goal: Gradually making English the second language in the city's school system.

In District 3, because the survey time coincided with the make-up class schedule, many schools proactively created favorable conditions for teachers to complete the survey right at school. Luong Dinh Cua Primary School, District 3, has arranged a separate computer room, allowing teachers to take advantage of the survey whenever there is a free period.

The school creates conditions for teachers to conduct surveys in the school's computer room.

Ms. Huynh Pham Minh Truc - English teacher at Luong Dinh Cua Primary School, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City shared that as an English teacher, she was very excited to participate in the survey. Through that, she could know her capacity to gradually have a specific project to improve herself more.

Ms. Vo Thi Ngoc Anh - Vice Principal of Luong Dinh Cua Primary School, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City   According to the plan, teachers can do the survey at home, but the school has a computer room so the school creates conditions for teachers to do it at school.

As a homeroom teacher who has achieved a B2 English certificate, but due to limited opportunities to use foreign languages regularly, Mr. Chau Hien Duc felt a bit pressured when taking this survey. According to a survey by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, more than 50% of teachers currently have little opportunity to teach English in their daily work.

Mr. Chau Hien Duc - Teacher at Luong Dinh Cua Primary School, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City said that at first he felt a lot of pressure, but with the support of the District leaders, he felt more confident.

Mr. Ho Tan Minh - Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City said that in the survey of more than 40,000 teachers across the city, over 80% have achieved level B1 or higher. However, more than 50% of teachers said that they have little opportunity to contact and use English in their daily teaching work. So it is clear that the implementation needs to be re-evaluated to have a plan to develop the project. And this is the first step to implement this content.

Mr. Ho Tan Minh - Chief of Office of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training

With a serious, open-minded and proactive spirit of innovation, Ho Chi Minh City’s education sector is striving to create strong changes. In particular, English is not only a subject, but will become an essential part of the international integration journey of the city’s young generation in the future.
