Speaking to VietNamNet , Dr. Tran Ba Trinh, Head of the Training Department at Hanoi Pedagogical University, said that fluctuations in admission scores will vary depending on the specific major.
The cutoff score for a major depends on at least three factors: the candidate's high school graduation exam score; the enrollment quota for each major (the quota for a major is usually inversely proportional to the cutoff score); and the attractiveness of the major/school as reflected in the number of applicants.
"However, the third factor is considered an 'unknown quantity,' because schools only know the total number of applications for admission to the school, not the specifics for each major, and they don't know how many of those applications were first-choice, second-choice, etc. Therefore, without a basis for this information, predictions about the cut-off scores are only approximate and for reference," Mr. Trinh said.
According to Mr. Trinh, based on the analysis of the 2024 high school graduation exam score distribution published by the Ministry of Education and Training, most subjects and admission combinations across all majors have slightly higher scores than last year.
For non-pedagogical training programs at Hanoi University of Education, the enrollment quota remains stable this year; however, for pedagogical programs, the quota for some majors has decreased slightly, such as Physics Education, Chemistry Education, and Biology Education (these were once compulsory subjects in junior and senior high schools, but are now elective subjects, leading to lower demand for teachers).
Thus, it can be seen that the overall average score of high school graduation exam students has increased, while the number of teacher training places has decreased, resulting in two factors contributing to the upward trend in admission scores.
Therefore, according to Mr. Trinh, if we disregard the third factor, which remains unknown, it can be generally predicted that the cut-off scores for the university's majors this year will be slightly higher than last year.

In particular, for teacher training programs with reduced enrollment quotas this year, such as Physics Education, Chemistry Education, and Biology Education, the expected cut-off scores will increase the most, possibly by 1-1.5 points compared to last year.
The cut-off scores for other teacher training programs such as Mathematics Education, Literature Education, etc., may increase slightly, by 0.25 to 0.5 points.
Regarding the cut-off scores for non-pedagogical training programs, Mr. Trinh said they will not fluctuate much. "If there are any changes, the cut-off scores will only increase or decrease by 0.25 to 0.5 points," Mr. Trinh said.
Regarding the two new integrated majors that the university will open and begin admitting students in 2024, namely Natural Science Education and History-Geography Education, Mr. Trinh predicts that the cut-off scores will not be low, but will be at the same level as the corresponding majors such as Physics Education, Chemistry Education, Biology Education, History Education, Geography Education, etc.
"Although these majors are new, that doesn't mean the admission scores will be low. These are still majors that meet the needs of society in the implementation of the 2018 general education program. Therefore, they still have plenty of appeal to students, and thus, the admission scores are not much different from traditional majors," Mr. Trinh said.
According to Mr. Trinh, the ranking of majors/groups of majors in terms of high-to-low cutoff scores will be the same as last year.
Last year, the highest admission score for teacher training programs at Hanoi University of Education, based on high school graduation exam results, was for History Education, at 28.42, while the lowest was for Fine Arts Education with a cutoff score of 18.3.
