Sao Paulo authorities said a total of 62 bodies, including 34 men and 28 women, have been found and taken to hospitals for identification before being handed over to their families. According to Vinhedo Mayor Dario Pacheco, the bodies of the captain and co-pilot have been identified through fingerprints.
Earlier, Maycon Cristo, a spokesman for the local fire department, told reporters in Vinhedo that a winch had been used to lift parts of the plane off the ground.
A twin-engine turboprop ATR 72 aircraft belonging to the local airline Voepass crashed in Vinhedo while en route to Sao Paulo International Airport in Guarulhos with 58 passengers and four crew members. Initially, Voepass stated the plane was carrying 57 passengers and four crew members, but later confirmed one additional passenger was on board. All 62 people on board perished, but no one on the ground was injured.
The accident occurred at 1:30 PM local time on August 9th. Videos shared on social media show the plane losing balance, crashing into a residential area, and bursting into flames. Brazilian aviation authorities announced that the aircraft's intact black boxes have been recovered, and experts from the Brazilian Center for Investigation and Prevention of Air Accidents (CENIPA) are analyzing the two black boxes. A preliminary report on the incident is expected to be released within the next 30 days.
