On the afternoon of August 22, Hanoi University of Science and Technology announced the admission scores for 52 training majors. Accordingly, the major with the highest admission score according to the High School Graduation Exam scores is Computer Science with 29.42 points.
Accordingly, the two national valedictorians of block A00 (with 29.35 points), Nguyen Manh Thang (former student of Bac Giang High School for the Gifted) and Nguyen Manh Hung (former student of Trung Vuong High School, Hung Yen province) both failed because they had registered their first choice for this major.
Thang's test scores were 9.6 in Math, 9.75 in Physics and 10 in Chemistry. Hung's test scores were 10 in Physics, 9.6 in Math and 9.75 in Chemistry.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology said that for many years, Hanoi University of Science and Technology has considered the standard score by doubling the score of the main subject, which is Mathematics.
The formula for calculating the standard score for Computer Science is as follows: Admission score = (Math x 2 + Subject 2 + Subject 3) x 3/4 + Priority points.
With the above calculation, students with high Math scores will have an advantage. Nguyen Manh Thang and Nguyen Manh Hung are the top students in the A00 group nationwide, but their Math scores are both 9.6, lower than the Math scores of many other candidates. Therefore, when applying the above formula, Thang and Hung's admission scores are not as high as those of other candidates with higher Math scores, even though these candidates are not top students.
Failing their first choice, but with high scores, both male students passed their second choice to study Computer Engineering at Hanoi University of Science and Technology. This year, this school's major requires 28.29 points.
The two valedictorians still have the opportunity to study Computer Science if they pass the interview round to be selected into the school's Computer Science Talent class.
