This is also Katie Ledecky's ninth gold medal in her career, thus equaling the record for the most Olympic gold medals by a female athlete in all sports, currently held by gymnast Larisa Latynina.
Another notable name is Simone Biles, who won the gold medal in the women's vault. This is the "Queen of Gymnastics'" third gold medal at the Paris Olympics, as well as her seventh Olympic gold medal. In swimming, American athletes also broke the world record in the 4x100m medley relay with a time of 3 minutes 37.43 seconds.
Despite the US team's strong surge in the medal standings, the Chinese team maintained their top position for the third consecutive day, winning three more gold medals on the eighth day, bringing their total to 16 gold, 12 silver, and 9 bronze medals.
Besides winning gold medals in their strong disciplines of badminton (Chen Qingchen/Jia Yifan, women's doubles) and table tennis (Chen Meng, women's singles), China also created a sensation in the women's singles tennis event.
In the final, Zheng Qinwen defeated Donna Vekic to bring home China's first-ever Olympic singles gold medal in tennis history.
Host nation France finished third with 12 gold medals, 14 silver medals, and 15 bronze medals, while Australia took fourth place and Great Britain fifth. South Korea and Japan were no longer in the top five, sharing sixth and seventh positions respectively.

China continues to lead the medal standings at the Paris 2024 Olympics after eight days of competition.
Notably, on the eighth day of competition, the Philippines became the first Southeast Asian team to win a gold medal at the Olympics, as well as the first to qualify for the overall medal table, despite 63 other teams having already won medals at the Games.
On August 3rd, two Vietnamese athletes, Trinh Thu Vinh (shooting) and Nguyen Huy Hoang (swimming), were unable to spring any surprises and followed 11 other athletes who had previously been eliminated from the Olympics. Vietnam now has only three athletes competing in the Games: Nguyen Thi That (cycling), Trinh Van Vinh (weightlifting), and Nguyen Thi Huong (canoeing).
