The power of Russian Ka-52M attack helicopters on the battlefield

The Ka-52M is the most modern attack helicopter in the Ka-52 series and has just been supplied to the Russian Air Force since early 2023. This helicopter model has improved optical and electronic systems, with equipment to deceive enemy air defense missiles.

The Ka-52M helicopter, known by the nickname “Alligator”, is equipped with modern weapons systems and night combat capabilities, allowing it to carry out precision strikes on enemy targets, even in bad weather conditions.

The Ka-52M is equipped with a new generation OES-52 optoelectronic aiming system and a new generation V006 Rezets active radar, which can detect enemy tanks from a distance of 45km, fighter jets from a distance of 50km and helicopters from a distance of 20km.

The helicopter has a defense system that is said to be capable of countering all types of infrared-guided shoulder-fired missiles.

The Ka-52M uses the L418 Monoblock missile defense and electronic warfare system, which is capable of interacting with UAVs using artificial intelligence. This allows the aircraft to control reconnaissance and attack UAVs.

“One of the key improvements to the Ka-52 is the integration of the new LMUR anti-tank missile with a range of about 15km. Ka-52 crews quickly took advantage of the opportunity to launch weapons far beyond the range of Ukrainian air defenses,” a recent report by the British Ministry of Defense stated. Accordingly, this improvement has demonstrated a remarkable turning point in the combat capabilities of the “Alligator” helicopter line.

The LMUR missile's "fire-forget" mechanism allows it to use the inertial satellite navigation system to fly to the target without needing helicopter guidance throughout the entire journey. This will help the Ka-52 helicopter not face the risk of flying into an area where it may be attacked by enemy air defense forces.

The helicopter's weapons are also diverse, including Ataka missiles (range 4 - 6km), Vikhr (8km), Vikhr-M (10km), LMUR (15km) and Izdeliye 305 cruise missiles that destroy targets at a distance of 25km without having to enter the combat zone of the enemy's short-range air defense missile system.

The crews of Ka-52M attack helicopters performed combat missions in the border area of the Kursk region, where intense military operations are taking place.

Pilots said that in recent missions they assisted in destroying enemy armored vehicles and assembly points in the conflict zone. The high maneuverability and powerful firepower of the Ka-52M helped deter potential attacks on Russia's borders.
