On January 26, Hoa Binh General Hospital confirmed that the Ear, Nose and Throat Department had successfully treated a complicated case of fish bone stuck in the throat, causing severe local and systemic infection.

Specifically, the 67-year-old female patient was admitted to the hospital on January 23 with severe pain in swallowing, difficulty eating and drinking, increased phlegm secretion, occasional wheezing and difficulty breathing. About 2 weeks ago, during lunch with braised fish, the patient suddenly felt severe pain in the throat and could not eat or drink.

At the hospital, doctors diagnosed the cause as a fish bone stuck in the throat, leading to inflammation and swelling in the right hypopharynx. Recognizing that this was a complicated case of foreign body stuck in the throat, doctors ordered a 64-slice CT scan with 3D reconstruction. The results showed that the fish bone was located in the right piriform sinus, next to the tracheal wall, at the level of the C4 vertebra. This is a very dangerous location because the foreign body can cause severe local and systemic inflammation; damage to the throat wall, leading to abscesses; damage to large blood vessels; compress the airway, causing suffocation and death.

After resuscitation, physical improvement, use of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs, the patient was prescribed endotracheal anesthesia and endoscopic removal of the foreign body.

The surgical team of Dr. Ho Quoc An and Master. Dr. Le Cong Hai successfully removed a sharp fish bone, about 1cm long. The procedure was safe, with no accidents or complications.

Doctors recommend that when choking on a foreign object, patients should immediately go to a specialized medical facility for timely treatment to avoid dangerous complications.

To prevent accidents, when eating foods with bones, people need to chew carefully, avoid laughing and talking while eating to reduce the risk of choking. For the elderly and children, bones should be carefully removed before eating. If cooking porridge, it is necessary to filter carefully to remove small bones.
