On August 10, Coteccons Construction Joint Stock Company (Coteccons) honored Mr. Mai Le Duy Quang (born in 1980, residing in Quang Ngai province) for his humanitarian spirit, brave actions, and selfless act of saving the driver in the series of accidents under Phu My bridge on the afternoon of August 8.

Coteccons also awarded a scholarship to Mr. Quang’s daughter along with a special reward. A representative of Coteccons shared that Mr. Quang has worked at Coteccons’ key construction sites for more than 10 years.

Mr. Quang said that he works in construction in Thu Duc City and has many years of experience in the construction industry. He has a wife and a 13-year-old daughter. Due to difficult living conditions, he left his wife and children in the countryside and went to Ho Chi Minh City alone to rent a room in Thu Duc City to work on the project.

On the afternoon of August 8, he was riding his motorbike through an area where there had been a series of accidents. He quickly stopped his motorbike and, together with local residents, rescued a man trapped in the car to safety.

“I climbed on top of the car to see if anyone was trapped inside. I saw a driver trapped and tried to call for help. I immediately broke the front window and tried to pull him out, but the driver was trapped by his seat belt."

Then, someone found scissors, so he cut the seat belt and pulled the driver out of the car. Just 1-2 minutes later, the car burst into flames.

According to Mr. Quang, at that time, he only thought about saving people. After successfully saving people, Mr. Quang received sincere thanks from the driver. After that, he quietly drove back to the construction site in Thu Duc City to continue his work.

On the night of the incident, images and clips of him saving people were spread on social media. Many relatives and colleagues recognized him after watching the clip. People called and asked about him, making him very happy because his actions were being spread.

However, Mr. Quang did not dare to call himself a “hero” because in that situation, everyone would have acted like him. He also said that this credit was not only his alone, but belonged to everyone present at that time. "At that time, everyone was shouting and trying to save people. Some held scissors, others held fire extinguishers to put out the fire. Without everyone, I alone could not have saved the driver from the car," said Mr. Quang.

As reported by SGGP, on the afternoon of August 8, driver D. (born in 1987, residing in Kien Giang province) was driving a truck from District 7 to Thu Duc City (HCMC). While going down Phu My bridge, the truck crashed into the median strip. The truck continued to crash into other vehicles moving ahead. The incident caused 2 passenger cars and 1 truck to burn; 4 other vehicles were severely damaged. Some people trapped in the above vehicles were taken out of the vehicles by local people and taken to the emergency room.

After the accident, many passersby bravely rescued the victim. This action was filmed by passersby, posted on social media and received much praise.
