Scenes from the working session. |
The People's Committee of Quang Ngai province is coordinating with the Ministry of Industry and Trade in developing a project for a National Petrochemical and Energy Center in the Dung Quat Economic Zone. The Dung Quat I, II, and III combined-cycle gas turbine power plant projects, part of the Central Vietnam Gas Power Center, are currently undergoing the necessary documentation and procedures.
Speaking at the meeting, Chairman of the Quang Ngai Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Hoang Giang said that in the first seven months of 2024, industrial and commercial activities in the province achieved many encouraging results. However, there are still shortcomings and limitations that require support from the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
According to Mr. Giang, Quang Ngai currently has 5 industrial parks (3 within economic zones and 2 outside economic zones) and 20 industrial clusters. Compared to provinces with similar economic scale, this number is still modest. Commercial infrastructure is limited, and there is still much potential for development. The number of medium-sized enterprises in the province is still small compared to other localities. The province has nearly 6,000 enterprises, but only one-third contribute to the budget revenue, and the province's low CPI (consumer price index) also reflects this reality.

Chairman of the Quang Ngai Provincial People's Committee, Nguyen Hoang Giang, hopes that the Ministry of Industry and Trade will continue to support the province in effectively exploiting its potential and advantages for industrial and commercial development. |
"The CPI in Quang Ngai province for the first seven months of the year increased by 3.28%, compared to 4.12% nationwide. A low CPI is good. However, compared to the general average, a low CPI also means that trade in the province is not yet vibrant or bustling," Mr. Giang said.
To effectively exploit the potential for industrial and commercial development, the Chairman of the Quang Ngai Provincial People's Committee requested the Ministry of Industry and Trade and its affiliated units to provide assistance to the province in activities related to industry and trade, including answering questions, resolving issues, and providing guidance. In addition, he requested the introduction of investors to the province, such as those investing in commercial centers, industrial infrastructure projects, and industrial production projects within industrial zones and clusters.
Concluding the meeting, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien highly appreciated the serious and proactive spirit of the Quang Ngai Provincial People's Committee in preparing the content for the working session with the delegation.
According to the Minister, the industry and trade sector in Quang Ngai province still faces limitations, difficulties, and challenges that need to be addressed.

Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien concluded the meeting. |
Firstly, while the industrial sector accounts for a large proportion of the province's GRDP, the structure of sectors within the industrial sector remains severely unbalanced, heavily reliant on refining and petrochemicals; the mining industry has not developed in proportion to its potential. Several large-scale industrial and energy projects in the province are still facing obstacles.
The linkages between the refining and petrochemical industries and downstream industries, as well as raw material sources, are limited, and the supporting industries are developing slowly. There is a shortage of high-quality local human resources, with the majority still being unskilled laborers with low levels of education and expertise; the development of the marine economy has not lived up to its potential and has not created a major driving force for the province's socio-economic development…
Regarding the key tasks and solutions that Quang Ngai province has set out for the coming period, the Minister basically agreed and suggested that the locality pay attention to implementing a number of key tasks.

Promote linkages between Dung Quat Economic Zone and Chu Lai Open Economic Zone to form a key coastal industrial center in Quang Ngai. |
Quang Ngai also needs to accelerate the restructuring of its industrial sector towards modernization, increasing the contribution of industrial production to the local GRDP. This includes focusing on developing key industries such as petrochemicals, high-quality steelmaking, and shipbuilding.
Flexibly applying effective investment models to mobilize social resources for infrastructure development, especially connecting transportation infrastructure, logistics infrastructure, and infrastructure of established key industrial zones, particularly the Dung Quat economic zone, to boost investment attraction, especially in high-tech industries with high added value.
Actively promote the linkage between Dung Quat Economic Zone and Chu Lai Open Economic Zone to form a key coastal industrial center for the Central Coast region and the whole country. At the same time, develop Dung Quat into a National Oil Refining and Energy Center.
