How does Vietnam's sports performance compare to other Southeast Asian countries at the 2024 Olympics?

After Trinh Van Vinh failed in weightlifting, Vietnamese sports seem to have lost hope of winning medals at the 2024 Olympics.

Philippines holds the number 1 position

Up to now, Vietnam has only 1 athlete who has not competed, Nguyen Thi Huong in canoeing. Although she is one of the brightest talents in domestic sports, her chance of winning a medal at the 2024 Olympics seems impossible. Thus, the possibility of Vietnam winning at least 1 medal at the Olympics this year is probably gone. This result is similar to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (taking place in 2021). Thus, it has been 8 years since shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh brought home 1 gold and 1 silver medal at the 2016 Olympics, the Vietnamese sports delegation has continuously suffered from empty hands. Meanwhile, countries with strong sports in Southeast Asia have all won medals at the 2024 Olympics. The Philippines is leading the regional rankings thanks to Carlos Yulo's 2 gold medals in gymnastics. In addition, they also won 2 bronze medals in boxing thanks to Aira Villegas (women's 50kg) and Nesthy Petecio (women's 57kg).

Thailand also won a gold medal thanks to female taekwondo athlete Panipak Wongpattanakit in the 49kg weight class. This was a predictable result, because Panipak is the world's number 1 athlete in this weight class. Previously, prodigy Kunlavut Vitidsarn brought home the first Olympic silver medal in history for Thai badminton. In weightlifting, Silachai Theerapong also achieved a similar result when competing in the men's 61kg weight class. This is the event that Trinh Van Vinh of Vietnam competed in but failed in all 3 snatches. Another weightlifter, Surodchana Khambao, also brought Thailand a bronze medal in the women's 49kg weight class. Previously, boxer Janjaem Suwannapheng also finished 3rd in the women's 66kg weight class. Up to now, Thailand has won a total of 5 medals at the 2024 Olympics and still has the opportunity to improve its achievements in boxing and weightlifting. Malaysia has also won 2 bronze medals, both from badminton. Aaron Chia - Soi Wooi Yik (men's doubles) and Lee Zii Jia (men's singles) are the ones who brought glory to this country. Also in badminton, Indonesia owns a bronze medal in women's singles thanks to Gregoria Mariska Tunjung. This is a pretty bad result for Indonesian badminton because from the 2004 Olympics to 2020, only the 2012 London Olympics did they not have a gold medal. With no medals at the 2024 Olympics, Vietnam's achievements are similar to those of Singapore, Cambodia, Laos, Brunei, Timor Leste, and Myanmar.

Thailand dominates at Olympics

Thailand is the most successful Southeast Asian country in Olympic history. They first won a medal in 1976, with the late Payao Poontarat winning a bronze in boxing. Since then, they have won a total of 40 medals, including 11 gold, 10 silver and 19 bronze. Since 1984, Thailand has always won at least one medal. Their most successful Olympics was in 2004, when they won three gold medals in weightlifting and boxing. Indonesia is the second most successful Southeast Asian country at the Olympics, having won eight gold medals, all in badminton. They have also won 14 silver and 16 bronze medals, for a total of 38 Olympic medals.

The Philippines only won its first gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics thanks to weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz. However, the team quickly rose to third place in the region with two more gold medals from Carlos Yulo this year. The Philippines has also won five silver medals and 10 bronze medals in Olympic history.

Vietnam Sports ranks 4th in Southeast Asia in Olympic participation history

Vietnam is the 4th ranked country in Southeast Asia at the Olympics, but its achievements are quite modest compared to the countries above it. In addition to Hoang Xuan Vinh's gold medal, the Vietnamese sports delegation has only won 3 silver medals and 1 bronze medal. Vietnam's achievement of 5 medals is equal to Singapore's (1 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze), but it is higher thanks to the number of silver medals. It is quite surprising that a strong sports delegation like Malaysia has never won an Olympic gold medal. Up to now, they have won a total of 15 medals including 8 silver and 7 bronze. Perhaps the Malaysians will regret the most in badminton, when the legend Lee Chong Wei entered the men's singles final 3 times in a row (2008, 2012, 2016) but lost all 3 times. Otherwise, they would have had at least 1 gold medal.
