On August 10th, in Hanoi , the Institute for Advanced Studies in Mathematics, in collaboration with the Vietnam Institute of Mathematics, organized a workshop to evaluate the training and competition results of Vietnamese students in national and international mathematics competitions from 2015-2024, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Vietnam's participation in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). Many outstanding mathematicians who had previously participated in the IMO team attended.

Since 1974, the Vietnamese team has had 289 students participate in the IMO, winning 69 gold medals, 118 silver medals, 84 bronze medals, and 3 honorable mentions.
Over the past 50 years, Vietnamese IMO teams have achieved relatively consistent results, earning high praise from other countries not only for the number of medals but also for their outstanding achievements.
Professor Ngo Bao Chau affirmed that the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) remains a platform for intellectual competition in mathematics, and to some extent, a measure to assess a nation's capacity for developing mathematics education . Former IMO students have become and continue to be professional scientists with international prestige, actively contributing to the development of mathematics in Vietnam.
At the workshop, delegates exchanged and shared ideas on how Vietnam can maintain and improve its achievements in mathematics on the international stage, and solutions for the sustainable and widespread development of the mathematics learning movement; how to make mathematics and other basic subjects a voluntary choice for young people…
