On August 10, in Hanoi, the Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics in collaboration with the Vietnam Institute of Mathematics organized a workshop on evaluating the training and results of national and international mathematics competitions for students in the period 2015-2024 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Vietnam's participation in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). Many outstanding mathematicians who participated in the IMO team in different periods attended the workshop.

Sustainable and widespread development of the Math learning movement

Since 1974, the Vietnamese team has had 289 students participating in IMO, winning 69 gold medals, 118 silver medals, 84 bronze medals, and 3 certificates of merit.

Over the past 50 years, Vietnamese IMO teams have had relatively stable achievements and have been highly appreciated by friends from other countries not only for the number of medals but also for their outstanding achievements.

Professor Ngo Bao Chau affirmed that the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is still a playground for the intellectual sport of mathematics, and is partly a measure to evaluate the capacity of developing mathematics education of a country. Former IMO students have been and are professional scientists, with international prestige, actively contributing to the development of Vietnamese mathematics.

At the workshop, delegates discussed and shared how Vietnam can maintain and improve its Math achievements on the international stage and solutions for sustainable and widespread development of the Math learning movement; how to make Math and other basic subjects become a voluntary choice for young people...
