On August 9, French media quoted a source from the Public Health Agency (SPF) saying that more than 3,000 cases of dengue fever have entered France since the beginning of the year, marking a record high.
According to the SPF, from May 1 to August 6 alone, the agency recorded nearly 1,000 cases of dengue fever entering France (not including overseas territories).
2023 and the first 8 months of 2024 have recorded a record number of dengue fever cases not only in France but worldwide.
The dengue virus appeared in France mainly due to tourists coming to the country and was transmitted from person to person by Aedes mosquitoes.
Dengue fever is a common disease in tropical climates caused by the dengue virus transmitted by the Aedes mosquito.
Symptoms of the disease include headache, high fever up to 40 degrees Celsius, exhaustion, muscle/joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2023, the incidence of dengue fever globally has increased significantly over the past two decades.
Since the beginning of last year, dengue fever has continued to spread with a record number of cases (5 million cases) and more than 5,000 deaths related to the disease recorded in more than 80 countries and territories.
