On August 9th, French media, citing sources from the Public Health Agency (SPF), reported that more than 3,000 dengue fever cases had entered France since the beginning of the year, marking a record high.
According to the SPF, between May 1st and August 6th alone, the agency recorded nearly 1,000 cases of dengue fever imported into France (excluding overseas territories).
The year 2023 and the first eight months of 2024 have seen record numbers of dengue fever cases, not only in France but worldwide .
The dengue virus appears in France primarily due to tourists visiting the country and is transmitted from person to person through Aedes mosquitoes.
Dengue fever is a common disease in tropical climates caused by the dengue virus, transmitted by the Aedes mosquito.
Symptoms of the disease include headache, high fever up to 40 degrees Celsius, exhaustion, muscle/joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2023, the incidence of dengue fever globally increased significantly compared to the past two decades.
Since the beginning of last year, dengue fever has been spreading relentlessly, with a record high number of cases (5 million) and more than 5,000 related deaths recorded in over 80 countries and territories.
