Russia's First Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dmitry Polyansky, believes that "under the protection" of the United States, Israel is confident it will be exempt from sanctions at the UN Security Council. This is a major obstacle to achieving a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Speaking on Soloviev Live , Polyansky shared: "For decades, Israel has been quite comfortable under American protection, even feeling, in one way or another, that it was exempt."
According to Polyansky, this became very clear during the escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian crisis, "when the US completely blocked the work of the Security Council for quite some time, preventing any suggestion of an immediate ceasefire – something the international community and other Security Council members were demanding."
On August 1st, Iran's Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, also stated that the US, UK, and France had blocked a statement proposed by Russia condemning the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh when he visited Iran to attend the inauguration of Iranian President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian on July 30th.
Earlier, on March 25, the United Nations Security Council for the first time adopted a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, and also calling for the release of all hostages.
This is the first time the Security Council has passed this resolution since the Israeli-Hamas conflict erupted, thanks to the US abstaining and the remaining 14 members voting in favor.
Previously, the US had consistently vetoed similar ceasefire resolutions, a move widely seen as supporting Israel – America's most important ally in the Middle East.
