| Treating Covid-19 remains one of the biggest challenges facing society. |
In an effort to generalize the information and impact of prolonged post-Covid-19 symptoms over the four years since the disease was first identified, the study indicates that the estimated economic cost from factors such as healthcare services, prolonged Covid-19 infection preventing people from returning to work, etc., is approximately $1 trillion worldwide each year, equivalent to 1% of global GDP.
In addition, approximately 6% of adults worldwide have experienced long-lasting post-Covid-19 symptoms; many have not yet fully recovered, and treating the disease remains one of the biggest challenges.
According to clinical epidemiologist Ziyad Al-Aly at Washington University in St. Louis (USA), co-author of the study, and head of research and development at the VA St. Louis healthcare system, his work with colleagues also aims to provide a roadmap for policy and research priorities.
This project also involved several other leading Covid-19 researchers, along with three leaders of the Patient-Led Research Collaborative, founded by patients with long-lasting post-Covid-19 symptoms who are also professional researchers.
