The notification stated: “Due to a technical issue, this news item is no longer available. Although we have resolved the issue, your news item cannot be restored.”
Meta, the owner of Instagram, declined to provide the number of affected users, but said only those whose stories were lost received the notification.
A Meta spokesperson said, “We have identified and fixed a bug that caused some featured photos and user archives to be deleted. Unfortunately, we are unable to recover the lost stories, and we are notifying affected users through the app.”
Instagram Stories are a more informal and relaxed way to share information compared to regular posts. Users can upload photos, videos , or text. This content disappears after 24 hours. More personal content can be shared with a close circle of friends or permanently stored on the profile as a highlight.
Stories differ from regular photos because they are often personalized with music, GIFs, text, filters, and interactive features like polls.
Some people also use Stories as a way to store photos and videos.
The aforementioned error from Instagram once again reminds us that relying on a single backup method for media can be an unwise decision.
For important memories, users should ensure they back up photos, videos, and other documents outside of the app, regardless of how trustworthy the company is.
