(Dan Tri) - The final competition week of the 2024 Paris Olympics will witness the acceleration of Southeast Asian sports delegations, while Vietnamese athletes have very little chance.
All hopes of Vietnamese sports are placed on weightlifter Trinh Van Vinh. After cyclist Nguyen Thi That failed in the women's road race, the Vietnamese sports delegation has only two athletes who have not yet competed at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The two remaining athletes of the Vietnamese sports delegation are weightlifter Trinh Van Vinh in the men's 61kg weight class and canoeist Nguyen Thi Huong in the women's C1 200m rowing race.

Nguyen Thi Huong will compete in the qualifying round of the above event at 3:30 p.m. on August 8. If she passes the qualifying round, she will compete in the semi-finals until the final (if she passes the semi-finals) on August 10. However, the possibility of Nguyen Thi Huong passing the qualifying round and especially the possibility of winning a medal is not high. All hopes of winning a medal of the Vietnamese sports delegation are placed on the shoulders of weightlifter Trinh Van Vinh. The Vietnamese weightlifter will compete from the quarter-finals of the men's 61kg weight class at 8:00 p.m. on August 7. In this weight class, Trinh Van Vinh's main opponents include weightlifters Li Fabin (China, highest total lift of 314kg), Hampton Morris (USA, 303kg), Sergio Massidda (Italy, 302kg), Yuli Irawan (Indonesia) and John Ceniza (Philippines), all with a total lift of 300kg.

Meanwhile, the highest total lift that Trinh Van Vinh has ever had is 307kg, set at the 2017 SEA Games. This is also the SEA Games record to date. If he repeats the above achievement, Trinh Van Vinh has the opportunity to win a medal for Vietnamese sports at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Will Southeast Asia continue to win medals in the second half of the 2024 Olympics? In contrast to the current situation of the Vietnamese sports delegation, other delegations from Southeast Asia have many opportunities to win medals in France. After having a bronze medal in the women's singles badminton event by Gregoria Mariska Tunjung and the opportunity to win a weightlifting medal in the men's 61kg category by Yuli Irawan, Indonesia also has the opportunity to win a weightlifting medal in the men's 73kg category by Rizki Juniansyah.

Specifically, Aira Villegas of the Philippines has entered the semi-finals of the women's 50kg category (competing on August 6), while Nesthy Petecio has entered the quarter-finals of the women's 57kg category (competing on August 7). As for Malaysia, they have won a bronze medal, belonging to Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in the men's badminton doubles. Malaysia has another player Lee Zii Jia who has entered the bronze medal match in the men's singles in badminton, competing on August 5. Meanwhile, although Thailand has not yet appeared on the medal table, their prospects are very high. At least, the sports delegation of the Golden Temple country is sure to have a silver medal (HCB). Kunlavut Vitidsarn has reached the final of the men's singles, badminton. The final match will take place on the evening of August 5.

This is the Olympic gold medal holder in the above weight class, and is also the strongest candidate for the gold medal at this year's Olympics. The women's 49kg weight class will compete on August 7. In the men's 68kg weight class, Banlung Tubtimdang is holding the Asian Games gold medal, as well as the world silver medal. This boxer can completely win a medal for Thailand. The men's 68kg weight class in taekwondo will compete on August 8. Thailand also has a chance to win a medal in the women's singles golf event, with golfer Patty Tavatanakit among the best female golfers in the world today.
