(Dan Tri Newspaper) - Nguyen Huu Tien Hung, a student from Bac Ninh Specialized High School, achieved the highest score for the Vietnamese team at the 2024 International Chemistry Olympiad.
With a score of 77.35/100, Nguyen Huu Tien Hung – a 12th-grade Chemistry student from Bac Ninh Specialized High School – not only won a gold medal but also ranked 17th among more than 300 outstanding contestants worldwide participating in this year's International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO). This is also the highest score achieved by the Vietnamese team in the 2024 IChO season. "The result exceeded my expectations. So I'm really surprised and happy," Hung said. However, the Bac Ninh student still has some regrets as he was unable to fully solve some difficult questions in the exam.

Hung's achievement significantly contributed to the national team's rise to second place, tied with the US and only behind China. Mr. Ha Huy Phuong, Principal of Bac Ninh Specialized High School, shared with Dan Tri newspaper about his student: "Hung is not only excellent in academics but also active in extracurricular activities and very good at sports. He is one of the nine most outstanding students in the school to be admitted into the Party this year." Before participating in the IChO, Hung had already won a gold medal at the Abu Reikhan Beruniy International Chemistry Olympiad 2023 while in 11th grade. At the national excellent student competition, Hung won a second prize in 2023 and a first prize in 2024. Nguyen Huu Tien Hung said that he began seriously studying chemistry in 9th grade under the guidance of his older sister – also a chemistry student at Bac Ninh Specialized High School. Previously, Hung excelled in natural sciences and had a penchant for in-depth knowledge related to biochemistry and medicine. He could spend hours on YouTube listening to analyses of immune mechanisms or watching lectures on clinical science intended for medical professionals or medical students. Seeing his inclination, his older sister advised him to study chemistry in depth so he could gain admission to Hanoi Medical University and pursue a career in medicine. Even though he only started studying chemistry in his final year of middle school, Hung won first prize in the provincial-level student excellence competition and secured a direct entry into Bac Ninh Specialized High School. One of Hung's study secrets was reading many books and materials, both domestic and international. He even read chemistry textbooks taught in universities in the US and UK. In high school, Hung met a teacher who strongly inspired him: Ms. Vu Thi Len. "She has had the biggest influence on me in both my studies and my life," Hung said.

Ms. Len has been accompanying Hung for the past three years. When Hung went to Saudi Arabia to compete in the IChO 2024, Ms. Len also went along to support her student. Sharing about his journey to conquer international awards in chemistry, Hung said that his biggest "gain" was having friends all over the world , meeting and interacting with friends who are both talented and highly motivated, and who always know how to balance life. With two gold medals in the International Chemistry Olympiad, Nguyen Huu Tien Hung was admitted directly to Hanoi Medical University. He aims to study abroad at a higher level, but Vietnam will be where he works and contributes. On June 3rd, Nguyen Huu Tien Hung was admitted to the Party at the Bac Ninh Specialized High School Party Branch, becoming a Party member at the age of 18.

Iran has again blockaded the Strait of Hormuz. On June 19, Iran reimposed a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz, citing Israel's refusal to withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon and the continued presence of US troops in the region.
Prior to Nguyen Huu Tien Hung, Bac Ninh Specialized High School had already won its first IChO gold medal in 2023. This achievement was accomplished by Nguyen Kim Giang, a former chemistry student from the 2020-2023 graduating class. In addition, the school has won three bronze medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 2011 (Nguyen Van Quy), 2023 (Khuc Dinh Toan), and 2024 (Nguyen Van Hoang).
