18-year-old Party member in top 20 candidates with highest scores at International Chemistry Olympiad

(Dan Tri) - Nguyen Huu Tien Hung, a student at Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted, is the person who won the highest score on the Vietnamese team at the 2024 International Chemistry Olympiad.
With a score of 77.35/100, Nguyen Huu Tien Hung - a 12th grade Chemistry student at Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted - not only won the Gold medal but also ranked 17th out of more than 300 excellent candidates worldwide participating in the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) this year. This is also the highest score that the Vietnamese team has achieved in the 2024 IChO season. "The results achieved are beyond my expectations. So I am really surprised and happy," Hung said. However, the Bac Ninh male student still has some regrets because there are some difficult questions in the exam that have not been fully solved.

Hung's achievements contributed significantly to helping the national team rise to 2nd place, equal to the US and just behind China. Mr. Ha Huy Phuong - Principal of Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted - shared with Dan Tri reporter about his student: "Hung is not only excellent in studying but also active in group activities and very good at sports. He is one of the 9 best students of the school to be admitted to the Party this year". Before coming to IChO, Hung won a gold medal at the Abu Reikhan Beruniy International Chemistry Olympiad 2023 when he was an 11th grader. At the national excellent student competition, Hung won a second prize in 2023 and a first prize in 2024. Nguyen Huu Tien Hung said that he started studying chemistry seriously since grade 9 under the guidance of his sister - also a chemistry major student at Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted. Before that, Hung studied all natural sciences and tended to delve into knowledge related to biochemistry and medicine. Hung could spend hours on Youtube listening to analysis of immune mechanisms or watching lecture videos with clinical science content intended for medical professionals or medical students. Seeing his inclination, Hung's older sister advised him to study chemistry in depth so that he could win a ticket to Hanoi Medical University and pursue medicine in the future. Although he only studied chemistry in his final year of secondary school, Hung still won first prize in the provincial excellent student competition and got a place directly into Bac Ninh specialized school. One of Hung's study secrets is to read many books and documents both domestically and internationally. He even read chemistry books taught in universities in the US and UK. In high school, Hung met a teacher who strongly inspired him. That was Ms. Vu Thi Len. "She is the person who has had the greatest influence on me in both my studies and my life," Hung said.

Ms. Len has accompanied Hung for the past 3 years. When Hung went to Arabia to compete at IChO 2024, Ms. Len also went along to support his student's spirit. Sharing about his journey to conquer international chemistry awards, Hung said his biggest "gain" was having friends all over the world, meeting and interacting with friends who are both talented and have high will, and always know how to balance life. With two gold medals at the Chemistry Olympiad, Nguyen Huu Tien Hung entered Hanoi Medical University directly. He aims to study abroad at a higher level, but Vietnam will be the place where he works and contributes. On June 3, Nguyen Huu Tien Hung was admitted to the Party at the Party Cell of Bac Ninh Specialized High School, becoming a Party member at the age of 18.

Before Nguyen Huu Tien Hung, Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted had its first IChO gold medal in 2023. This was the achievement of Nguyen Kim Giang - a former chemistry student of the 2020-2023 course. In addition, the school has 3 bronze medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 2011 (Nguyen Van Quy), 2023 (Khuc Dinh Toan) and 2024 (Nguyen Van Hoang).
