Anyone caught doing doping will be banned for life.

Michael Phelps' statement came after reports from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and World Aquatics (FINA), revealing that 23 Chinese swimmers tested positive for banned substances before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021). Notably, nine of these athletes went on to win medals at the 2024 Olympics, contributing to the resounding success of the men's 4x100m medley relay team in dethroning the US team, which had dominated the event since 1980, according to the Spanish newspaper Marca .

"It's unacceptable if all athletes don't undergo the same rigorous testing. That undermines the integrity of the sport (swimming). Those who are willing to take such risks (using doping) don't deserve to compete," Michael Phelps expressed his concerns about fairness in competition, especially at the Olympics.

"Throughout my career, I've faced allegations of cheating. To prove my dedication to the competition and my integrity, I've undergone extensive testing – blood and urine tests – weekly," Michael Phelps shared.

He also affirmed that he never considered using banned substances to enhance his performance, and expressed pride in his achievement of winning 23 Olympic gold medals (out of a total of 28), becoming the most decorated athlete in Olympic history.

"I achieved my success the right way. You can reach the top without cheating," Michael Phelps asserted. He also stated, "When I was competing, I often felt the competition wasn't fair. I doubted some of my opponents, but that was beyond my control."

"Therefore, to avoid this situation, which is still controversial, we need a new and unified approach to doping testing worldwide. And anyone found guilty should face an immediate lifetime ban," Michael Phelps suggested.
