The specialized aptitude test for university admissions has been implemented by Ho Chi Minh City University of Education since 2022. The university will continue to organize this exam in 2025.
Many improvements have been made to the structure of the exam papers for various subjects.
According to Master Nguyen Ngoc Trung, Vice Rector of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, after three years, the specialized competency assessment exam has gradually gained widespread acceptance in society.
Many schools have explored using the exam results for admissions and have achieved very encouraging initial results.
Particularly in 2024, after five days of registration opening, the percentage of candidates registering at testing centers in Ho Chi Minh City and Long An province reached over 80%. The total number of candidates participating in all five rounds of 2024 reached 8,540.
"We will continue to develop the specialized competency assessment exam for the coming years. At the same time, to align with the new general education program, the school's specialized competency assessment exam from 2025 onwards will have many improvements in the exam structure for mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and literature. For English, the exam structure will remain the same as in previous years," Mr. Trung added.
What does the sample test for the specialized competency assessment exam look like?
According to Mr. Trung, to help candidates understand the competency assessment test and prepare well for the upcoming exam, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education has published sample test questions for the new structure of the specialized competency assessment exam starting in 2025.
The sample test is designed for students currently enrolled in the high school curriculum, participating in exams organized from 2025 onwards. The content covers 70-80% of the material from the 12th grade curriculum, with the remainder covering material from the 10th and 11th grades.
The subjects of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology include 40 questions divided into 3 parts: Part 1 consists of 25 multiple-choice questions (divided into 2 different formats: multiple-choice questions with one correct answer and multiple-choice questions with more than one correct answer).
Part 2 consists of 5 multiple-choice questions on aggregated data, and Part 3 consists of 10 fill-in-the-blank questions.
The Literature exam will consist of 22 questions divided into three parts: Part 1 - Reading Comprehension with 20 multiple-choice questions; Part 2 - Short Paragraph Writing with one essay question; and Part 3 - Essay Writing with one essay question.
For English, the exam structure remains the same as in previous years, following the approach of an assessment test format from levels 3 to 5 according to the 6-level foreign language proficiency framework used in Vietnam. The exam materials are diverse and drawn from many different fields.
The exam time for mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and literature is 90 minutes, while for English it is 180 minutes. Candidates will read and complete the exam on a computer.

From 2025, to expand the scale of the exam for admission purposes of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education and other universities, the specialized aptitude test is expected to be held in Ho Chi Minh City, Long An, Gia Lai, Da Nang , and will continue to expand the number of higher education institutions using the results.
