On the evening of August 8th, Muhammad Yunus, the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was sworn in as the leader of Bangladesh's interim government .

President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved parliament on August 6, a day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced her resignation and departure from the country amid increasing pressure from protesters. Yunus, 84, was appointed head of Bangladesh's interim government.
According to AFP , after his appointment, Yunus pledged to form a government that would ensure the safety of the people and called on them to support him in the reconstruction of Bangladesh.
He affirmed, "I will uphold, support, and defend the Constitution," and carry out his duties "sincerely." Yunus's main task now is to restore stability in Bangladesh and prepare for new elections.
Mr. Yunus was in Paris to attend the 2024 Olympics as an advisor and returned to Bangladesh on the afternoon of August 8th. He enjoys widespread public support as well as the student protest movement.
In a congratulatory message posted on social media platform X after Mr. Yunus took office, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent his best wishes to the interim leader of Bangladesh.
Modi wrote: “India remains committed to working with Bangladesh to realize the shared aspirations of our two peoples for peace, security and development.”
On the same day, Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Mantytskiy stated that the political turning point in the South Asian nation was an internal matter and Moscow would cooperate with any government in power.
According to AFP , on the same day, the US government welcomed the interim government of Bangladesh and expressed hope for cooperation to jointly promote democracy.
According to US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller, Chargé d'affaires Helen LaFave – the highest-ranking US diplomatic official in Bangladesh – attended the swearing-in ceremony and is in contact with Yunus's interim government.
From the European Union (EU), High Representative for Security and Foreign Policy Josep Borrell also issued a similar statement on the same day.
Mr. Borrell stated: “The EU looks forward to working with the new government and supporting this particularly important transition, which will be part of a peace and inclusive process based on good governance, democratic values and respect for human rights.”
