On the evening of August 8, Mr. Muhammad Yunus, winner of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize, was sworn in as leader of the interim government of Bangladesh.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved parliament on August 6, a day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced her resignation and fled the country amid mounting pressure from protesters. Yunus, 84, was appointed head of Bangladesh's interim government.
AFP news agency said that after being appointed, Mr. Yunus pledged to form a government that ensures safety for the people and called on them to support him in rebuilding Bangladesh.
“I will uphold, support and protect the Constitution” and carry out my duties “sincerely,” he said. Yunus’ main task now is to restore stability in Bangladesh and prepare for new elections.
Mr. Yunus was in Paris to attend the 2024 Olympics as an advisor and just returned to Bangladesh on the afternoon of August 8. He has the support of many people as well as the student protest movement.
In a congratulatory message posted on social media X after Yunus took office, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent his best wishes to the leader of Bangladesh's interim government.
“India remains committed to working with Bangladesh to realise the common aspirations of both our peoples for peace, security and development,” Mr. Modi wrote.
On the same day, Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Mantytskiy said that the political turn in this South Asian country is an internal matter and Moscow will cooperate with any leading government.
According to AFP , on the same day, the US government welcomed the interim government of Bangladesh and expressed hope for cooperation to promote democracy.
According to US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller, Charge d'Affaires Helen LaFave - the highest-ranking US diplomat in Bangladesh - attended the swearing-in ceremony and has been in contact with Mr. Yunus's interim government.
From the European Union (EU), High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell also made a similar statement on the same day.
“The EU looks forward to working with the new administration and supporting this crucial transition, which will be part of a peaceful and inclusive process based on good governance, democratic values and respect for human rights,” Borrell said.
