Residents in the suburbs of Nea Penteli and Vrilissia wore masks to protect themselves from the thick smoke and tried to use hoses to extinguish fires around their homes. This was the first time the fire had spread so close to the area.

Melina Kritseli, a civil servant living in the Patima Halandriou area, said: “This is the first time the fire has reached here. I took my children to a friend’s house to ensure their safety.”
Television images showed numerous burnt-out cars and burning roofs as firefighting helicopters flew overhead to extinguish the flames. The situation became critical, and Penteli Mayor Natassa Kosmopoulou warned that the fire was spreading toward public buildings.
Greece has officially appealed for assistance from the European Union (EU). Units from Italy, France, the Czech Republic, and Romania have been sent to provide support, while aid from Spain and Türkiye is on its way.
The fire started Sunday afternoon in Varnavas, about 35 km northeast of Athens, and spread rapidly with flames reaching 25 meters high thanks to strong winds. More than 700 firefighters with nearly 200 fire engines and over 30 aircraft are working to control the blaze.
This year's wildfire season in Greece has seen dozens of fires breaking out every day. Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias warned that half the country is facing a high risk of wildfires due to high temperatures, strong winds, and drought conditions. Temperatures in Athens are expected to reach 39 degrees Celsius on Monday, with winds reaching up to 50 km/h.
Scientists believe that human emissions of fossil fuels are exacerbating the duration, frequency, and intensity of heatwaves around the world, leading to longer wildfire seasons and larger fire areas. Other parts of Europe are also facing high temperatures, such as France, Italy, and the Netherlands.
