To date, Africa has recorded more than 15,000 cases of mpox and 461 deaths this year, with cases appearing in 18 countries. The outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo began with the Clade I variant, followed by the new Clade Ib variant which spread through close contact, particularly among children.
Jean Kaseya, head of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), said Africa needs more than 10 million doses of vaccine but currently only has about 200,000. He pledged to quickly increase the vaccine supply.
The U.S. is closely monitoring the spread of the virus. Deputy State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel said the U.S. has provided more than $17 million this year to support preparedness efforts in Central and East Africa.
The Danish biotechnology company Bavarian Nordic has also pledged to donate 40,000 doses of the mpox vaccine to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
