AFP reported that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet pressed the button to officially launch the Funan-Techo canal project at a ceremony held on the morning of August 5th in Kandal province, about 35 km from the center of Phnom Penh, which is also the starting point of the future canal.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Funan-Techo canal project took place in Kandal province on August 5th.
The canal project, estimated to cost $1.7 billion, aims to create a new 180-kilometer waterway stretching across four Cambodian provinces: Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep.
The construction costs will come from domestic and foreign investment sources, implemented under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) model, and is expected to be completed after 48 months of construction.
Cambodia wants Japan to invest in the Funan-Techo canal project.
This canal is 100 meters wide upstream and 80 meters downstream, with a depth of 5.4 meters. It has two lanes to allow ships to pass each other safely. The Funan-Techo canal project will include the construction of three hydroelectric dams, eleven bridges, and a 208-kilometer-long riverside walkway.
