Efforts from both sides

In a speech to labor unions in Los Angeles, Tim Walz emphasized: “Vice President Kamala Harris and I both know who built this country. Nurses, teachers, and state and local government employees are the ones who built this nation. That’s not just empty talk; it’s the truth. When labor unions are strong, America is strong.”

The 60-year-old governor of Minnesota has garnered significant national attention since Vice President Kamala Harris chose him as her running mate. With this decision, the Democratic Party hopes to solidify support among working-class white men – a key voting bloc that could help the party win in battleground states like Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.

Last week, Tim Walz and Kamala Harris visited these three states, along with Arizona and Nevada, as part of their joint campaign. Observers noted that Tim Walz presented a stark contrast to his Republican rivals, presidential candidate Donald Trump and vice presidential candidate JD Vance. Workers present at the August 14th campaign rally in Los Angeles also described Tim Walz as "approachable, very down-to-earth, and someone who has been in a similar social standing to us."

On the Republican side, billionaire Elon Musk and former US President Donald Trump were almost in agreement on every topic in their interview, which was streamed live on the social media platform X on August 13th. The interview was the latest development in the White House race, which has been full of surprises in recent weeks, following the attempted assassination of Donald Trump in Pennsylvania and President Joe Biden's decision to drop out, handing the torch to his running mate Kamala Harris. However, after the interview, the United Auto Workers (UAW) filed a lawsuit against former President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, alleging that some of their statements were threatening to workers during the live interview on X.

The Democrats prevailed.

Recent polls show that Kamala Harris has not only narrowed the gap with Donald Trump in national support, but has also pulled ahead in key battleground states. According to a New York Times/Siena University poll released on August 11th, Kamala Harris garnered 50% support in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, while Donald Trump received 46%. The poll, conducted between August 6th and 10th, involved 1,973 voters who had expressed their intention to vote. Including third-party candidates and independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Kamala Harris leads Trump by 5% in Michigan, 2% in Pennsylvania, and 6% in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania are traditional Democratic strongholds, forming a "blue wall" that propels Democratic candidates into the White House. Donald Trump won these three states in 2016, before Joe Biden regained them four years later.
