Three young high school photographers from Hanoi will participate in the International Photography Festival for High School Students in Higashikawa, Hokkaido, Japan, from August 19-25, known as the "photography city." On August 3rd, the festival participants officially launched at the Department of Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibitions in Hanoi. They are: Hoang Ngoc Khanh (10th grade, Kim Lien High School), Nguyen Thao Tien (10th grade, Doan Thi Diem High School), and Hoang Tue Lam (Bao Long High School). Photographer Nguyen Khac Hieu will serve as team leader, guiding the team members throughout the festival. The team is named Ha Long, a name commemorating the 30th anniversary of Ha Long Bay receiving the World Natural Heritage title (1994-2024). This is the ninth team representing Vietnam at the International High School Photography Festival since 2015. Previously, several Vietnamese teams participated in the festival, including the Tay Ninh team, the Can Tho team, and the Nha Trang team.

The International Photography Festival for High School Students in Japan is a familiar competition for young photography enthusiasts over the years. This year, the festival features 21 international teams and 2 Japanese teams. The connection between Vietnamese contestants and this festival is made possible by photographer Nguyen Ba Han, introduced by the Japan Photographic Association. In early 2024, photographer Ba Han organized a photo series competition titled "Things I'm Proud of About My City," from which three outstanding students were selected to participate in the festival in Japan. According to photographer Ba Han, this competition aims to encourage and develop the photography movement among Vietnamese students. The competition also provides an opportunity for high school students to showcase their photographic talent, helping them enhance their ability to observe life, explore new perspectives, and discover fresh themes. Present at the launch and exchange event on August 3rd, photographer Chu Chi Thanh, a former war correspondent for the Vietnam News Agency, offered words of encouragement to the Ha Long team. He expressed his joy at seeing a young generation continuing the proud tradition of Vietnamese photography. “Participating in an international competition, with many international friends, be humble, courageous, but most importantly, don't let yourselves be influenced by external factors. Use your mind and heart to find beauty and subjects, then boldly press the shutter button,” Mr. Chu Chi Thanh shared.
Photographer Nguyen Ba Han was born in 1957 in Thua Thien- Hue province and grew up in Nha Trang. After graduating from high school, he studied meteorology. At the age of 24, an accident caused him to suffer burns all over his body. His life turned tragic until he found joy and purpose in photography. In 2002, he was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to study photography in the United States. There, he received support from American photographer Jerry Butchfield. From 1993 to 2014, he received numerous prestigious international awards and organized many photo exhibitions in countries such as Japan, Italy, and Switzerland. Currently, he is a member of the Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists (VAPA), the International Federation of Photojournalists (MP IFPO), and the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP).
