Amazon has just announced that in 2023, all electricity consumed in Amazon's operations, including the operation of its data centers, will be 100% renewable energy.

Previously, in 2019, Amazon set a goal for all of its global operations – including data centers, corporate buildings, grocery stores, and fulfillment centers – to use 100% renewable energy by 2030, and now the Amazon corporation has announced that this goal has been achieved seven years ahead of schedule.
To achieve this, the corporation has become the world's largest buyer of renewable energy for four consecutive years (according to Bloomberg NEF), while investing billions of dollars in more than 500 solar and wind power projects globally, with a total capacity sufficient to power the equivalent of 7.6 million households in the United States.

Achieving this goal early marks a significant milestone in Amazon's efforts to meet its Climate Commitment of net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Looking ahead, Amazon remains committed to this goal; however, in recent years, this roadmap has undergone unpredictable changes, primarily due to the increasing demand for AI generation. Fulfilling this commitment requires different energy sources than initially anticipated, so Amazon will need to be flexible and constantly adjust its approach to achieving net-zero emissions.
Alongside continuing its strong investment to add significant renewable energy capacity to its portfolio, Amazon is also exploring new carbon-free energy sources that could supplement renewables and balance its needs.
Amazon's Chief Sustainable Development Officer, Kara Hurst, said : “Achieving our renewable energy goals is an incredible accomplishment, and we are proud of what we have done to reach this goal seven years ahead of schedule. However, we understand that this is only one step at a time, and our carbon decoupling efforts will adjust accordingly each year. Therefore, we will continue to invest in solar and wind projects, and support other carbon-free energy sources, such as nuclear, battery storage, and new technologies that can power our operations for decades to come.”
