At the 2024 year-end conference, Meritorious Artist Dinh Trung Can, General Director of VCPMC, said that last year, the number of authors authorized to collect music copyrights increased by 729 authors. The total number of authorized member authors at VCPMC to date is 6,511 authors (data as of December 31, 2024).

The Center also increases support, consultation, and legal aid for authors to avoid risks that affect their rights and interests when there are copyright transfer transactions; Propagates and informs members about cases of legal risks, loss of rights, loss of works due to signing a transfer but not carefully reviewing the terms of the contract, not keeping the contract, list of works for comparison, and re-checking when necessary; Supports and guides authorization documents with inheritance elements; Visits and helps authors who are sick, ill, authors in difficult circumstances, and lonely.

Mr. Can said that from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024, the total amount of money collected from using music copyrights by VCPMC (excluding VAT) was VND 393,063,879,166 (VND 393 billion), an increase of 14.2% compared to 2023.

VCPMC carries out 4 distribution periods each year, both domestically and internationally, according to the distribution rules of CISAC (International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers), using international storage and distribution software to perform data entry and royalty distribution. After completing the distribution data of each quarter, VCPMC proceeds to pay by bank transfer or cash to authors and copyright owners in the first month of the following quarter.

In 2024, VCPMC made distribution and payment periods to copyright owners with an amount of VND 256,871,238,874.

It is expected that the distribution amount of the fourth quarter of 2024 will be paid to authors and copyright owners in January 2025, approximately VND 94 billion.

Mr. Can also affirmed that contracts that do not meet the conditions for distribution (contracts that have not expired or are waiting for a list to be added, contracts that have been invoiced but have not been paid or have not been fully paid, contracts that have received money but the using unit has not declared the list of songs used...) will continue to be reconciled and distributed in the next period.

Despite great efforts to collect music copyrights to ensure the rights of musicians and owners of works, Mr. Can said that there are still many difficulties in licensing and protecting rights in the performance field, due to the complicated situation of copyright infringement in the performance organization field, including domestic and international shows. Many units still lack awareness and voluntary performance of the obligation to pay copyrights, and find ways to make things difficult and avoid performing their obligations.

"Currently, a series of copyright-infringing programs are in the process of being handled for infringement according to legal procedures, typically some cases such as May Lang Thang (over 300 infringing programs), Lululola (over 200 infringing programs), iME (Korean program 2024 Chanyeol Live Tour)...", Mr. Can said.

Promoting the copyright industry

At the conference, Associate Professor Dr. Bui Hoai Son, Standing Member of the National Assembly's Committee on Culture and Education, emphasized the importance of copyright to culture and highly appreciated the efforts of the VCPMC team. Mr. Son said that many countries consider copyright an industry and hope that Vietnam will have a copyright industry.

"We should focus on developing copyright and starting from there to develop culture, protecting what is necessary because creative talent is an important factor to continue the process of developing the cultural industry. Respecting copyright means respecting the creative efforts of artists. Protecting copyright helps artists have a better life and promotes the sustainable development of art. The goal of developing professional art is to take artists as the center," Mr. Son emphasized.
