Royalties of veteran musicians are more stable than those of young people

In 2024, the Vietnam Center for Music Copyright Protection (VCPMC) will collect more than VND 393 billion from music copyright use, and from the fourth quarter of 2023 to the third quarter of 2024, it will distribute more than VND 256.8 billion to music copyright owners.

The amount of money for the fourth quarter of 2024 has just been summarized as 94 billion VND, which will be distributed before Lunar New Year 2025.

Musician, Meritorious Artist Dinh Trung Can - General Director of VCPMC - shared with VietNamNet reporter that the collection of music copyright fees in the early stages faced many difficulties, but now there are many positive and promising signs.

"Currently, many musicians are distributed royalties of more than 1 billion VND/year. Cases that reach the 1 billion VND/quarter mark do exist, but they are very rare or are special cases due to certain situations. The number of musicians receiving several hundred million VND/year is common," according to Mr. Can.

The General Director of VCPMC revealed that the group of veteran musicians, especially in the revolutionary music field, have more stable royalties than young musicians.

Specifically, their revenue from cyberspace is not too high, but their works are used regularly by television and radio stations, and by annual art and political programs and events.

Meanwhile, young musicians often have hits, and their royalties can peak for a while and then drop when the song is no longer popular.

Mr. Can is proud that royalties help many musicians have a good life. When they pass away, this money continues to be used to take care of their wives and children, and to pay their respects...

"Every time relatives of musicians inform me that their sick family members are being treated well thanks to the royalties left by their parents and grandparents, I feel very happy," he added.

79 copyright infringement lawsuits

VCPMC said it often faces difficulties in licensing and protecting rights in various fields, especially in the performance field, due to the complicated situation of infringement, including domestic and international shows.

Many shows and stages have not paid copyright fees for a long time, such as: May Lang Thang (over 300 shows in violation), Lululola (over 200 shows in violation)...

Last year, the Center sued IME Music Company Limited for not paying royalties for the show 2024 Live tour concert: Chanyeol (City-scape) in Ho Chi Minh , similar to TJ Communications Company Limited - the organizer of the show 2024 Baekhyun Asia Tour (Lonsdaleite) in Ho Chi Minh .

The unit also informs and works with partners such as the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) to coordinate in handling and preventing infringement.

In the field of broadcasting/radio and television, the lawsuit against Ba Ria - Vung Tau Radio and Television Station by VCPMC has been accepted and resolved by the Court.

To date, the unit has handled a total of 79 lawsuits on copyright infringement, intellectual property disputes, and contract disputes; and resolved 34 cases.

In the digital and media fields, in addition to legal measures, VCPMC also applies technological measures.

Last year, the Center also worked, exchanged and cooperated with foreign companies and organizations such as: International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC), Google, Meta, Spotify, SESAC Music Group...
