Scientists looked at two main types of coffee drinkers, those who drank primarily in the morning and those who drank all day.
During a follow-up period of nearly 10 years, researchers from Tulane University noted that the group drinking morning coffee had a 16% lower risk of overall death than those who did not drink; the risk of death from cardiovascular disease was reduced by 31%.
Meanwhile, people who drank coffee all day did not get the same health benefits.
Higher coffee consumption was "significantly associated" with a lower risk of death, but only among those who drank coffee in the morning, the study, published in the European Heart Journal, highlighted.
The authors suggest that timing may play a role in how coffee interacts with the body, affecting factors such as circadian rhythms, inflammation, and blood pressure. However, they say more research is needed to confirm these results.
Professor Thomas Luuscher, Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital (UK), said: "Many people who drink coffee all day have sleep disorders. We need to remember that the habit of drinking coffee, especially in the morning, can be good for health."
However, you should note that excessive coffee consumption can cause some harmful effects:
- Sleep problems: Caffeine in coffee can cause sleep disorders if consumed too close to bedtime. Because caffeine can stay in the body for 5-6 hours, causing insomnia and reducing sleep quality. People who are sensitive to caffeine often have difficulty falling into deep sleep.
- Anxiety and restlessness: According to Healthline , consuming high doses of caffeine can lead to feelings of anxiety, even panic attacks, especially in sensitive people. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, making the body tense and irritable.
- Digestive problems: Coffee can stimulate the stomach to secrete acid, causing acid reflux, digestive problems such as stomach pain or heartburn. People with stomach problems (such as stomach ulcers) should be careful when drinking coffee.
- Caffeine dependence: Regular coffee consumption can easily lead to caffeine dependence, causing the body to need a certain amount of caffeine to maintain energy. When you don't have enough caffeine, you may experience symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, and irritability.
