This is the information given by Mr. Do Ngoc Hung, Head of the Vietnam Trade Office in the US, at the Trade Promotion Conference with the Vietnamese Trade Office System Abroad organized by the Ministry of Industry and Trade on the afternoon of April 28.

According to the Head of the Vietnam Trade Office in the US, the high-level exchanges, the phone call between General Secretary To Lam and US President Donald Trump, the working trip of the Deputy Prime Minister, the working trip of the Minister of Industry and Trade, Head of the Government Negotiation Delegation in March and recently the phone call between Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien, Head of the Government Negotiation Delegation, and US Trade Representative Jamieson L. Greer on April 23 demonstrate the strategic and consistent vision of the Party and Government leaders in strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.
Through discussions with a number of consulting units about the US's move, the Head of the Vietnam Trade Office in the US said that all parties agreed that the USTR posting a press release on the USTR's electronic portal about the results of the phone call between the two sides one day after the meeting (India was the second country to be reported after nearly 9 weeks of the two countries agreeing to start bilateral negotiations) showed that the USTR was seriously considering the proposal for a high-level bilateral meeting.
In particular, USTR invited the interdisciplinary working group to meet to kick off negotiations this week (the delegation exchanged technical levels with Vietnam during the holidays), demonstrating the US's interest and respect for Vietnam. "The US considers Vietnam an important, serious, and good-willed partner, and genuinely acknowledges the US's concerns," said Mr. Hung.
Notably, Vietnam is also in the group of countries that the US prioritizes for negotiations, including: India, UK, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and Indonesia.
According to the Head of the Vietnam Trade Office in the US, many large US businesses have expressed their support and confidence that Vietnam will reach an agreement with the US, through removing reciprocal tariffs and considering attending the International Sourcing Event organized by the Ministry of Industry and Trade in September 2025 in Vietnam (Vietnam International Sourcing Expo 2025).
In that context, the Head of the Vietnam Trade Office in the US suggested that Vietnam increase diplomatic efforts and negotiations to lobby for the settlement of reciprocal tax issues, and continue to implement a specific roadmap for Vietnam to protect its trade interests against potential tariff measures from the Trump administration.
Vietnam strengthens strategic cooperation with the US to ensure sustainable development in bilateral relations between the two countries, from industry to trade, investment, energy, artificial intelligence, etc.
"Because countries subject to tariffs may increase trade protection measures, putting greater competitive pressure on the Vietnamese market. Fully cooperating with the US in providing information for trade lawsuits is also important to protect business interests and avoid legal risks," said Mr. Hung.
