The German Foreign Office has launched a new digital platform for visa applicants. The system, which provides digital services, will be available from January 1 at all 167 of the country's visa offices worldwide.
The digital platform will make it easier for people from all over the world to apply for a visa to Germany to work, study or reunite with their families. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock praised the digital platform, calling it “a real administrative revolution”.
“Germany is short of at least 400,000 skilled workers every year, which means it is short of 400,000 smart minds and even faster hands to keep the country running,” Foreign Minister Baerbock stressed. The country’s economy is also in global competition to attract interns, apprentices and students.
“So at times like these, we cannot afford to let qualified people waste too much time on lengthy visa application forms and even longer waiting times. As one of the largest economies and a modern immigration nation, we need a modern and secure digital visa process.”
“In a comprehensive structural reform that has lasted more than two years, Germany has completely overhauled the old visa process. We are finally bringing Europe’s most modern immigration law into the digital age,” Ms. Baerbock said.
The online visa application process is a real administrative revolution that both businesses and large companies have long called for, and is expected to strengthen Germany’s position as a business destination. With the new digital platform, anyone who wants to work or study in the country, attend training courses or reunite with family members can apply for a visa via the Digital Consular Services Portal. This will reduce postal deliveries and reduce waiting times for visas.
