With its historical, cultural and philosophical depth, Binh Dinh traditional martial arts is not only a martial art, but also the crystallization of the martial spirit, self-reliance and noble behavior of the Vietnamese people.
Aware of the importance of this heritage, from very early on, the government and people of Binh Dinh have always cherished, preserved and protected it. The province has issued and implemented the Project to Preserve and Promote Binh Dinh Traditional Martial Arts.
Accordingly, the province has provided funding to maintain, transmit and develop typical martial arts schools and martial arts clubs; organized the compilation and introduction of traditional martial arts into teaching in schools, created conditions for the development of mass physical education and sports, thereby searching for and discovering young talents to promptly nurture and bring them into the provincial teams.
In addition, the Provincial People's Committee has directed the Department of Culture and Sports to coordinate with relevant sectors to conduct surveys and collect martial arts exercises, weapons, and portraits of late martial arts masters and outstanding martial arts masters at martial arts schools in and outside the province; successfully organize eight International Festivals of Vietnamese Traditional Martial Arts, making an important contribution to the work of preserving, promoting, and introducing traditional martial arts to the public.
In particular, the Department of Culture and Sports of Binh Dinh province has just organized an international scientific conference with the theme "Protecting and promoting intangible cultural heritage and traditional martial arts of Binh Dinh", gathering opinions of experts and researchers on intangible cultural heritage to serve the completion of the dossier of Traditional Martial Arts of Binh Dinh submitted to UNESCO for consideration of inclusion in the list of Representative Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
At this workshop, Mr. Frank Proschan, former senior expert of UNESCO, believes that Binh Dinh traditional martial arts has the potential to spread globally, becoming a model in preserving and developing living heritage, while emphasizing that one of the key factors is "empowering the community to self-determination" and maintaining the sustainability of the heritage through generations.
However, Dr. Tran Thi Huyen Trang, a writer specializing in folk culture, said that the preservation and promotion of Binh Dinh traditional martial arts is currently facing many difficulties and challenges. The changes of the times and the social demand for martial arts have a profound impact on the development of the successor team. In addition, the source of documents on traditional martial arts is mainly oral, limited in accuracy and completeness.
To promote the value of heritage, Prof. Dr. Weonmo Park - Director of the International Network and Information Center for Intangible Cultural Heritage in Asia and the Pacific under the auspices of UNESCO (ICHCAP), emphasized that "dialogue and innovation are the keys to success in cooperation to protect intangible cultural heritage".
Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong also affirmed that the construction of a dossier to register Binh Dinh Traditional Martial Arts as a UNESCO heritage will bring great pride along with the responsibility to protect and promote the heritage in a sustainable manner.
As the cultural management agency, the Ministry will closely coordinate with authorities at all levels, subject communities, and domestic and foreign experts to carry out this important task.
