Ho Chi Minh City Book Street: A bright spot in developing people's reading culture

The birth of Ho Chi Minh City Book Street and the Tet Book Street Festival shows the importance of reading culture, being a "bright spot" attracting people to approach, interact and form positive habits with books.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, in the context of strong digital technology development, the Reading Culture movement not only helps preserve and promote traditional reading habits but also arouses love for books through new approaches, combining printed books and e-books, between real space and digital space.

Since then, the movement has not only played an important role in education but also created a community rich in knowledge, contributing to building a civilized, modern society with cultural depth.

Over the years, Ho Chi Minh City has always paid attention to and taken care of the spiritual and cultural activities of the people, focusing on preserving and developing reading habits, arousing the love of books, as well as developing a reading culture.

The annual Tet Book Street Festival as well as the establishment of Ho Chi Minh City Book Street (on Nguyen Van Binh Street, District 1) are vivid examples.

This event is also in the top 50 typical activities of Ho Chi Minh City in the past 50 years voted by the people. Ho Chi Minh City Book Street officially came into operation in 2016, the first book street model deployed in the country.

With a great advantage of being located right in the center of the city, near tourist attractions, this place is a familiar destination and attracts a large number of domestic and foreign visitors to visit and experience.

Book Street is considered a cultural highlight of the city, where many bookstores from all over the country converge with open space, visitors are free to visit and read books.

Besides, the Tet Book Street Festival - a special event that has taken place annually for over a decade - is considered a bright spot in developing reading culture.

Mr. Lam Dinh Thang, Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Ho Chi Minh City, said that the Tet Book Street Festival has become an indispensable cultural feature every time Tet comes and spring comes.

The Tet Book Street Festival is identified as one of the typical cultural activities, contributing to raising awareness of the value of books, while creating an attractive space for enjoying knowledge and art.

The event has many unique highlights with a space imbued with culture and art; rich and diverse content; many interesting experiential activities.

"We believe that the city will not only be a key economic and cultural center of the country, but also a bright spot in developing reading culture," the management agency said.

Ho Chi Minh City Book Street and the Tet Book Street Festival have long become ideal meeting places, creating new features and making new contributions to the city in spreading reading culture.
