To prevent patients' relatives from assaulting medical staff as happened in Phu Tho

The Ministry of Health affirmed that assaulting medical staff while providing emergency care to patients is an "immoral" act, condemned by society and needs to be severely punished.

Watching the clip of a patient's family cursing, screaming and beating medical staff at Thanh Ba Medical Center (Phu Tho province), it is difficult for anyone to control their anger and indignation.

On the evening of April 25, a 12-year-old patient, who had a traffic accident, was diagnosed with traumatic brain injury, broken frontal bone, multiple soft tissue injuries...

Immediately after the antibiotic injection, the patient showed signs of anaphylactic shock. The family lost their composure, stood around the hospital bed, continuously screamed and hit the doctors.

The doctors and nurses remained calm and focused on successfully saving the child. In an emergency, there are only a few minutes of "golden opportunity", if there is a delay, the child cannot survive.

The doctor's heart and responsibility were shown at this moment, ignoring all the scolding and even being assaulted, the most important thing at that time was to save people.

Many assaults on medical staff have occurred, causing social condemnation, the community to be outraged, and doctors and nurses to be worried and insecure, but so far there have been no effective measures to prevent them.

Regarding the assault on medical staff in Phu Tho, Dr. Nguyen Lan Hieu - Director of Hanoi Medical University Hospital expressed his opinion on his personal page:

"I do not criticize the patient's family. In the position of the child's parents, anyone would certainly lose their composure in such life-and-death moments. It's just a pity that there was a professional security system, early isolation of relatives from the emergency area and strong enough laws to restrain the burning heads...".

So, there are two things that need to be done, one is a professional hospital security system, the other is legal regulations to deal with those who assault medical staff.

The Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management - Ministry of Health has just sent an official dispatch to the Director of the Department of Health of Phu Tho province regarding strengthening security and order in medical examination and treatment facilities.

Requests are one thing, but whether medical facilities can implement them is another. To have a professional protection system, funding is needed, not general instructions.

Another issue raised is the need to consider separate regulations to combat medical violence. Doctor Nguyen Lan Hieu said: "The Vietnamese medical sector deserves a law to protect us, so that we can feel secure in our profession."
