According to the report of Phu Xuyen District People's Committee, in recent years, Phu Xuyen District has achieved many remarkable achievements in population and development work. The birth rate is stable, the third child birth rate is controlled, the population growth rate has slowed down. The quality of the population has been gradually improved, the sex ratio at birth has also decreased in recent years.

Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Health Tran Van Chung spoke at the conference.

In the first 9 months of 2024, the sex ratio was 110.2 boys/100 girls, down from the same period last year. Although the sex ratio at birth is on a downward trend, it is still higher than the allowable level (the allowable level is from 103-107 boys/100 girls).

Without strong and timely interventions, the gender imbalance at birth will lead to unpredictable consequences for social order, security, and politics; leading to a shortage of women and excess of men of marriageable age, and leading to the breakdown of family structure, affecting future population quality.

In recent times, the district has implemented many activities such as: many models in communes and towns. Many activities to enhance the voices of women and girls have been implemented such as: pre-marital health consultation and examination model; reproductive health care model for adolescents and youth...

However, population work still faces many difficulties and challenges. The results of reducing births are not yet stable, the rate of giving birth to the third child or more in some communes is still high. Large population size, wide residential areas, uneven education, awareness and psychology of wanting to have many children and preferring to have sons are still the causes leading to a high level of gender imbalance at birth.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Health Tran Van Chung emphasized that in order to promote gender equality and reduce gender imbalance at birth, it is necessary to invest in care, education, love, sharing, and helping girls in difficult and special circumstances. This is a very humane act for children in general and girls in particular that the leaders of the Hanoi Party Committee and government always aim for.

“In the coming time, the Hanoi Department of Health will continue to coordinate with departments, branches and organizations to promote propaganda and raise awareness of gender equality. Especially in the care and protection of girls to create a healthy and safe living environment, helping children develop best both physically and mentally. All girls are equipped with knowledge, skills and confidence to assert their position in society” - Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Health emphasized.
