CHAPEA is the latest experiment by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), designed to better understand the impact of isolation on the performance and health of the crew.

With the long-term goal of preparing for a future mission to Mars, 53-year-old biologist Kelly Haston participated in a 378-day experiment that concluded in early July. Kelly Haston lived in complete isolation during the project, conducting activities simulating space travel, from "walking" on Mars (pictured) to tending a vertical garden...
The few people she interacted with directly were three teammates and fellow inhabitants of Mars. They lived in a 3D-printed environment, installed inside a hangar at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. Beyond psychological factors, CHAPEA also focused on recording each crew member's food intake and analyzing blood, saliva, and urine samples.
NASA is currently keeping details of the crew's missions under wraps to maintain an element of surprise for the CHAPEA 2 test, scheduled for 2025.
