Having achieved all three ESG factors, Masan Group ranks among the top listed companies - honored as one of the "Top 50 Outstanding Sustainable Enterprises in Vietnam 2024".

In 2024, the corporation continued to integrate ESG (environmental, social, and corporate governance) into its business operations and decisions, aiming towards a 2030 vision of implementing innovative initiatives to ensure compliance with ESG and sustainable development.

Attracting foreign investment through "dual capabilities"

Originally a spice factory in Ho Chi Minh City, Masan Group has grown into a leading consumer goods and retail group in Vietnam with nearly 30 factories and more than 3,600 WinMart/WinMart+/WiN retail outlets nationwide.

In June 2024, in Fortune magazine's first-ever ranking of the top 500 companies in Southeast Asia, Masan Group was the leading company in the consumer goods and retail sector in Vietnam, with revenue exceeding US$3.2 billion in 2023. The group is also one of the leading businesses in attracting foreign investment, especially during periods of international capital market congestion.

In 2023, the group attracted a syndicated loan package of up to US$650 million from BNP Paribas, Credit Suisse, HSBC, Standard Chartered, and United Overseas Bank. In April 2024, Bain Capital (a US-based private equity fund) also completed a US$250 million equity investment in Masan Group.

The investment of hundreds of millions of USD into the corporation has affirmed the confidence of foreign financial institutions in the corporation's "dual capabilities": the ability to execute business effectively and deliver high efficiency, and a sustainable development strategy.

In recent years, in addition to business performance, ESG practices (environmental, social, and corporate governance factors), green growth, and sustainable development have become key criteria for international investors when evaluating investment decisions in a company.

The corporation has implemented ESG integration into its business operations by identifying key themes vital to its business activities and production value chain.

Sustainable resource management

With business operations that profoundly impact 100 million Vietnamese consumers, the group has invested in advanced manufacturing plants, utilizing the world's most modern and environmentally friendly production lines.

"When planning any new project, we always assess the impact on the surrounding environment beforehand, and then develop appropriate environmental protection plans before implementing the project," a representative from Masan Group stated.

According to the company, its commitment to the environment stems from the most immediate concerns, starting with caring for the environment surrounding the workplace. The group's factories and the surrounding areas are greened and provide fresh air.

For example, at Masan Consumer's factories, 20% of the total campus area is dedicated to green spaces to ensure a green and environmentally friendly workplace. Similarly, Masan MEATLife's chilled meat processing complexes have green coverage ranging from 24% to 31% of the total complex area, exceeding local requirements.

To improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, the group's factories have implemented various initiatives. For example, Masan Consumer utilizes rice husks and sawdust to produce renewable energy for its entire production facility.

As a result, it not only provides a sustainable and cost-effective energy source but also contributes to job creation and increases the income of local people.

In addition, these factories optimize production processes and reduce energy consumption by utilizing heat loss during frying and sterilization, avoiding processes that alter the temperature.

"Masan Consumer was awarded ISO 50001:2018 energy management system certification in 2023. This recognition acknowledges our commitment to energy conservation and motivates us to maintain and expand energy-saving measures across all our operations," a company representative shared.

The company also stated that, in addition to energy saving practices, water management is a top priority. In 2023, Masan Consumer recorded a total water consumption of over 123.8 million m³, a decrease of 11% compared to 138.4 million m³ in 2022. The long-term goal is to reduce water usage by 5 to 10% per production unit by 2025 through enhanced water recycling measures.

Recognized as a top workplace in Asia.

With diverse business operations spanning multiple sectors and products sold in numerous markets worldwide, the corporation employs people of various nationalities: the United States, Australia, India, and Vietnam.

With a diverse workforce of nearly 40,000 members from various regions and countries, the corporation was honored as "Best Workplace in Asia 2023". It also won the award for "Company with a Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive Workplace" from HR Asia, a leading and prestigious human resources magazine in Asia.

Mr. Le Ba Nam Anh - Senior Director of Capital Markets and Strategic Initiatives, Member of Masan Group's ESG Committee - said: "As a leading enterprise in the consumer retail sector with products and services for 100 million Vietnamese consumers and a trusted partner of suppliers, we see the important role and influence of the group in upgrading the food value chain and contributing to Vietnam's Net Zero commitment by 2050."

This requires a different way of thinking about the future of business models, where sustainable development is not just about risk management but also about opportunities to make a difference for customers, partners, and the community. "Doing well by doing good" - That's the path we're taking.

With a well-structured sustainable development strategy, Masan Group has consistently been included in the "Top 50 Outstanding Sustainable Enterprises in Vietnam" ranking organized by Nhip Cau Dau Tu magazine for many consecutive years. In 2024, the group was the leading listed company, honored in all three categories: E - Sustainable Resource Management; S - Human Resource Strategy for Sustainable Development; and G - Excellent Corporate Governance.
