Intellectual property protection

Vietnam Science and Technology Joint Stock Company (Busadco) was established in 2007, specializing in researching and developing science and technology products and services in the field of synchronous construction of urban and rural technical infrastructure systems; environmental protection; natural disaster prevention and response to climate change.

The scientific and technological project of the embankment protecting Vo Thi Sau Lake (Vung Tau City) of BUSADCO Company has been registered for exclusive patent and industrial design.

By March 2025, Busadco had researched and launched 101 science and technology products certified by the Department of Science and Technology of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province. These products have been applied in practice and commercialized, achieving high efficiency. Currently, the company's products have been widely applied in 52/63 provinces and cities nationwide, of which 19 provinces have issued policies allowing the application of products locally. The company's average annual revenue reaches nearly 400 billion VND, of which revenue from science and technology activities accounts for about 75%.

Busadco has signed more than 2,200 domestic and international contracts to apply science and technology products in the fields of natural disaster prevention and response to climate change (such as prefabricated embankments to protect river banks, lakes and sea dykes); technical infrastructure (underground technical trenches for urban technical infrastructure, manholes to collect rainwater and prevent odors, intra-field canal products, etc.); environmental protection (environmental protection septic tanks, winch clusters for dredging urban drainage ditches); prefabricated houses made of non-metallic fiber reinforced concrete, etc.

Mr. Hoang Duc Thao, General Director of Busadco, said: As a science and technology enterprise, most of the company's products are formed from technological innovations, industrial designs, new models and useful solutions to improve productivity and product quality. This is a competitive advantage, so the company pays special attention to the registration and protection of intellectual property to prevent design theft, counterfeit goods, lost contracts, etc.

To date, Busadco's products have been granted 88 patents for inventions and utility solutions; 242 patents for industrial designs and 126 decisions pending for granting of patents by the Department of Intellectual Property.

Improve competitiveness

According to the Department of Science and Technology, over the past time, provincial leaders have always identified intellectual property as the key to improving competitiveness, attracting high-quality investment and strongly activating the spirit of creativity in the whole society.

The province has been implementing many major policies and strategies on innovation, digital transformation and science and technology development. In particular, building an intellectual property culture is identified as a fundamental solution, contributing to the formation of a synchronous, cohesive and sustainable innovation ecosystem.

The Provincial People's Committee and People's Council have issued many programs and policies to support intellectual property development, such as: Intellectual Property Strategy to 2030; Intellectual Property Development Program for the period 2022-2025 and orientation to 2030; Plan to implement the Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation Development to 2030; resolutions to support individuals and businesses in registering for protection of inventions, industrial designs, trademarks, new plant varieties; improving productivity and quality of products and goods; supporting small and medium-sized enterprises in creative startups...

Support policies implemented synchronously have contributed to strongly promoting the establishment and protection of intellectual property rights for organizations, individuals and enterprises. Activities supporting the establishment of intellectual property rights have been promoted, the number of applications and protection certificates has increased steadily every year.

Specifically, in 2024, the province recorded 409 intellectual property registration applications (including 15 patent applications, 8 utility solution applications, 26 industrial design applications and 360 trademark applications), an increase of 58.8% compared to the annual average in the period 2018-2022 (an average of 255 applications/year).

In 2024, the province was also ranked 4th out of 63 provinces and cities nationwide in terms of PII (Local Innovation Index) by the Ministry of Science and Technology, up 3 places compared to 2023.

However, according to Mr. Nguyen Ky, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology, current development is still mainly focused on the brand group, while intellectual properties with high technology content such as inventions, useful solutions and commercialization capabilities are still modest.

Currently, the province only has about 15-20 patents and utility solutions each year. Although this number has increased compared to before, it is still not commensurate with the potential and development orientation in the field of intellectual property and innovation that the province is aiming for.
